PROM Mods
Hi All: After reading all the articles on burning your own PROM, for some of us this is much too complicated. I really don't want to get that intimately involved with learning all the acronyms and doing trial and error chip burning. I would prefer just to buy one for my model of car, apparently from a private source since the commericial ones are reputed to be somewhat worthless. One would think it would be much easier to go to an expert with a similiar engine set-up and just order a chip from that source. Does this make any sense to some of you or am I just being a whimp and should bite the bullet and try to program my own PROM. (THIS DOES APPEAR TO BE TOO TIME CONSUMING AS WELL WHICH IS THE REAL ISSUE)
Thanks,
Laser

what is wrong with stock chip? as the level of mods increase the opportunity to get it right from mail order burner are inversely proportional. maybe a board member lives nearby that could lend a hand but that is iffy.

RE: Chip Burning
Ronnie, good point on not getting a universal fit. I'm sure changes need to be made to increase performance, cooling fan temps and shift point speeds. This is a TPI 350 by the way.

Do you suppose he drives, the same exact way as you do?. There's a huge difference in what one driver calls OK, and what another does.
For the money you'll WASTE, you could buy all the stuff to do your own. Not to mention that if change anything else in the future, you'll just be saving more.
Sometimes you just have to dive in, and *just do it*.

RE: Chip Burning
Grumpy, thanks; just call it fear of the unknown! What components are absolutely necessary to do a burn job? If I get this right, does an updated tuner program over write (new chip of course) the OE PROM and is the other option to program your own specs into the PROM? IF so, are you using the specs on the tuner program to more or less guide your spec changes into the new PROM? Wouldn't want to to blow the engine by inputting unrealistic specs.

you need to datalog(winALDL or tunerpro rt 4.0) first to determine what you need to change such as main fuel tables/choke etc.
and/or datalog with WO 02 to calibrate the AE (aka pumpshot) and possibly PE or WOT A/F.
then we burn a new chip with some (not a lot) changes and repeat above. maybe 100 times? now i would suggest we start with stock GM bin for your or a similar platform car.
but b4 all that study, especially yhe stickies. Intro to Prom Tuning

Burning PROMS
Hi there, I'm still working on re-arranging the cold air system since it is so befuddled at the present time. Then I may play with the chip, mostly making minor mods to the spark advance, fan temps and WOT pump shots.
