WTF!
How come when I ask a question about where to start to learn about burning my own proms no one even freakin reads it? I NEED to get a prom burned for my app but I dont really want to buy one. I have the equipment but I have no idea on what the fuc k I am doing. I need to know some of the basic $h1T so I can at least run the car. I have a miniram, vette heads, LT4 hot cam, afpr, msd 6al, 1 3/4 headers, cat back, and some other small stuff. I a converting to SD and I need to know some stuff soon.

I doubt you will get much help using that tone.
Maybe you should do a search on this forum for the words "getting started" or search for posts by Traxion as he has covered this numerous times.
Better yet go back to the very first post and read all that have topics relating to your situation.

OK I admit I have an attitude, but it seems like when ever a real problem question is asked it gets almost no response, while the questions like "what do you think of these wheels...." gets an overwhelming response. Yes there are a lot of people on this board and all I realize, but there are a lot of knowledgeable people too and dont seem to want to help out. I dunno, I have a lot of issues with the board since Dirk took it down for a while. It is a real shame that that had to happen. It isnt the same anymore.
But like I said in my original post I dont really see what I need to get started. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Going back and reading is a good idea, there is just so much stuff its really impossible to cover it all. I dunno if Trax's tech article is up yet, but thats a must read. Ill tell you now burning your own proms is alot of reading, its not like a set path you have to follow. You will need a burner, eraser, and some sort of program to modify the bin file. Tunercat and Winbin are probably the most popular. There are others as well. I know tunercat is at www.tunercat.com. Im not sure where winbin is. For each of these, you need an ecm or definition file that allows the program to correctly modify your bin file. Once you have that stuff, you can change the settings and tables in the prom so that its getting the correct amount of fuel and timing.

I read trax's article, I have the burning stuff here at work, and I downloaded winbin. I need to know what I am doing in winbin. I only want something to let my car run with the new things I am adding. I am converting to SD and I want the bare minimum until I have time to learn this stuff next year. I really only need to know how to change from 22lb injectors to 24's make sure it is for a manual car and if there is anything else that may make a difference. I just dont want to spend $200 on a chip right now.

This can be taken the wrong way, but you have to do some homework with this stuff. To ask such a broad question, the answer would take reams of paper to answer.
Like the one guy mentioned *tone* has alot to do with who I even reply to. I got other things to do.

James,
When people ask questions similar to the one that you just asked the usual reponse is to do research. Typically, the best place to start for F-body guys is with my PROM article. However, the article references many internet sites that you need to visit and read and study and experiment with. As mentioned previously, there is no set path. Its not like following an instruction sheet. My article references sites that contain articles such as Programming 101 by Grumpy. I would spend as much time as you can wading through all of the websites and studying what you find. Also download the ECM archives at DIY-EFI.org. They are extremely helpful. Again, this is not like following instructions for installing a set of cylinder heads. Its not like that. Whatever you put into it ... you will get out of it.

Ok just a though, but how long did it take any one of you guys to learn where to start on burning your own proms? I have a few minutes here and there all day to read my mail and reply to them. So it takes like a whole minute to read and write a reply. Then when I am done I have to log off my computer so someone else can use it at work. So for me to pull up a page and have to read a bunch of stuff to only have to log off in a minute or so is hardly worth the hassle. I have NO TIME TO LEARN. And as I told Trax I am in a bind. I have to get my **** together or I am stuck. My friend has winter break from college and he is taking my TPI whether I am ready to give it up or not. And its more liek 350 I will have to spend. I guess I will just have to work more at my second job and have even less free time to work on my car...... Oh it is 12:40 and I just got home from work and I am going to sleep to get back up for work at 6:30
Guess you are running thin on options. Tuning takes alot of time. Trial and error. Logging what happened. Figuring out what tables and parameters do what. My tuning expierence is small compared to some of the folks here, but I do know it takes time.
As far as time goes I've spent months reading the GMECM archives and the mail list. I'm sure others will say the same.
www.cartek.net is in New Jersey. I believe they will tune your car for you. I don't know anything about them except they exist. Might want to talk with them. A search on the WWW might reveal some of their customers. If they are any good it sure would beat a mail order eprom.

I got tired of getting shafted by a *tuner*, and ordered the editor, and burner one day, week or so later had the bits, and started.
That was about in 95, where there was noone to ask. No archives to read, no nuttin.
For my 2 cents, it's easier then ever to get going.
Limited on nettime?, copy to disc and read later. No PC, get a junker for $50 and do it that way.

Well I have 3 computers and no time to use any of them. I just dont have the time right now to learn it or *** with this stuff. I plan on being able to do it in the spring. It is too bad I had to post with an attitude to get a response like this. Thank you to all who responded.
Scooter, we know where you're coming from but effective tuning just happens to be one of those things that takes time. Even if you take the EFI out of the equation, tuning a motor requires a lot of trial and error (read: TIME).
If you don't have time of your own to spend on this, you're either going to have to pay for someone elses, or buy a COMPROMISE chip like a JET or Hypertech.
If you're looking for one of those "... for dummies" books on TPI tuning, it doesn't exist. Trust me, you're not the only one.. I don't have nearly enough time to learn this stuff right now, either. That's why my Camaro still has the stock chip and stock TPI! I'd much rather read & learn now and mess with stuff later, than put together a combination that doesn't work and have a car that won't run for s**t.
Maybe it would help if someone came up with a flowchart, outlining the method one would follow to tune a TPI setup? I'm not volunteering for this, mind you
It would have to be kinda generalized, but maybe it would give newbies a place to start.

OK I dont think people understand what I want here. I am NOT looking for perfection. I am not looking to be fucing with this stuff to get it right. I am going from an 88 MAF to 90-92 SD system and a different than stock cam, heads and intake and I need something to make it RUN. Not run like my friend says a "raped ape". I just need to go. But I guess there isnt help for me as of right now. I am kind of screwing myself by doing a bunch of crap at once, I realize. So unless someone can help me out and make a chip for me that will let the car run I am going to have to go either DFI or get some company to do a chip for me. I WANT to, believe me, do this myself and save a lot of cash. But it isnt the case, I have about 3 weeks without any free time until my stock TPI gets a new home to have a chip for my car. I have spent some time reading today a link that Trax has on his article. Another problem is I have no freaking Idea what half that stuff means. I think I would be able to "get" this a little better if I had some one to sit and talk with in real time. Anyone want to consider helping me on the phone?

So that's what this whole dance has been about. All along you wanted someone to feel sorry for you and offer to burn a chip for free. Now you ask if someone will take their time to hold your hand over the phone!
Absolutley unbelievable.

First off I have to say I dont loose my temper like this but I have to say FU to Brent. I never wanted anyone to spend lots of time with me for free But I figured someone could help me a little bit. And two I have talked with lots of people I have met over the internet. Most of them have been willing to talk to me on the phone. And I am not asking anyone to pay for the long distance phone call. Sometimes I have a hard time understand things when they are written but when a person explains them verbally I can usually understand. Also talking with someone they can elaborate on things if I have questions whereas what ever is written is written and that is it. Then I have to go look for it. My original intent was not to be a bum and ask for anything for free. I was simply stating my options. I was also pointing out that I am not really looking to tune **** right now, I JUST WANT MY NEW FREAKING COMBINATION TO RUN! In fact I would like this thread to be locked so I dont have to get any more emails on it.
Scooter,
I am sorry for the frustration you are having about getting the response you want. However, it has already been said that you do not have time to do any of the research necessary to learn the proper way to burn a PROM. By following that same logic, you would not have time to read any of the information someone posted here to help you. PROM burning isn't a cut and dry do it in five minutes kind of job. It takes time to even get the basics, and if you do not have time, then it's best if you took it to someone to do it for you. I'm sorry if this isn't the answer you're looking for, but your question *has* been answered and I am now locking this thread before any more arguing goes on.
