is it possible to bypass the prom and hook a laptop up the ecm, so you could change info without burning a prom. Also does anyone make a computer based scanner to hook up to the aldl?

You can pretty much do anything you want if you want to spend enough money.... A real time emulator(with dual ported ram) will allow on the fly changes but now you are working in hex...no fancy tunercat software will allow updates..so you better know what you are changing....I think accel has a piggyback computer that will allow SOME real time changes(never used one) As far as the datastream goes there are quite a few such as Diacom and Autotap...just the tip of the iceberg but can get you lot's of results....sorry I don't have any handy hyperlinks... ttyl

Diacom, and The Turbo Shop sell ALDL scanners. There are lots of others thou. I found a used Diacom + some years ago, and have been happy with it. But, on the early and TBI it has it's limits. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 747 edge board scanner thou in the next few months...

To keep this as simple as possible....
No. There is no way that you can change your calibration without burning a PROM. PROM emulators and software like Kalmaker just let you close in on your calibration without burning multiple PROMs. However, in the end you will still have to burn a PROM and swap it with the one currently in your ECM. I believe that you are referring to systems such as the 94+ 4th gens that have EEPROMs. These types of PROMS are electronically eraseable and therefore can be reprogrammed while STILL in the ECM. However, our PROMS are only erasable via exposing to UV light.
With all that said ... I bet that someone could probably come up with system that COULD accomplish this. It is a well known fact that you can replace the standard EPROM in our cars with an EEPROM. That's great because then you never need to use the UV light. Also, electronically erasing PROM is darn quick as compared to standard EPROM UV erasing. Hmmmmm.
