Question about Prom burning...
I have a ZZ4TPI, edelbrock hi-flow, SLP runners/headers, 24lb injectors, adjFPR, MSD6AL, no EGR or AIR pump/lines. I also have a nice Compaq laptop. What do I need to buy to begin to burn my own prom? I need a spare chip to experiment on since this is my wifes daily driver. What software do I buy, cables to attach etc. I have a ZZ4TPI chip from Street and Performance who sells ZZ4TPI setups to streetrodders but I feel there is more performance in my motor. What software do I buy? I'm 37 and have killed many brain cells over the years, something simple please. Opinions please.

Start by reading Traxion's article https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml and go to EVERY LINK that Traxion provides in there after you have read everything. I actually printed it off and read it a few times.
The links provided in Traxion's article to ECMGUY and DYI_EFI are also very good. And then go to this Bruce Plecan's Tuning Tips http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/S.../prog_101.html for some good info.
And lastly, expand the "topic range" on the PROM board to show all posts in the last year (there's not that many), but it'll get you all of them. And just start reading from the oldest post to the most recent. 99% of all your questions have already been asked by someone else.
As burners go, I got the Xtronics Pocket Programmer http://www.xtronics.com/memory/EPROM.htm it was the most reasonable price parallel port based eprom programmer (burner) that I could find. Traxion's article includes this and a couple of other programmers.
For a UV Eraser, I took Traxion's recommendation of the Datarase II without the timer. Traxion has a link to that in his article.
Lastly, you'll need an Editor. Traxion has a couple of recommendations in his article along with those other links in ECMGUY, DYI_EFI and Bruce Plecan's. I went with TunerCat http://www.tunercat.com/ which has really good "definitions" for my SD TPI. You would have the 165 MAF TPI with the 6E definition. Some people prefer the other editors (again in Traxion's article) like GMECMPRO and WinBin.
That's basically it. The biggest investment will be time and testing. But the more you spend playing with it...the better (and easier) it gets. There is no "quick fix", but within a few weeks, you'll be amazed on what you can do and realize this isn't that hard.

To start you will undoubtedly need the Diacom to diagnose your engine.
Then to get into the burning you will have to make an investment regarding the burners, and erasors.
I am currently using the Rom Master/2 (cheap and works great)
and a EPROM Eraser which I purchased form these guys
http://www.xeltek.com/
Then you will need the software to change the code, I am using GMPRO but there are others on the forum whom like the TunerCATS
Regards
John
