Plugging in prom with stock memcal on SD car

I installed an aftermarket prom into the ECU, and I had to re-use my old prom (directions said to). I attached it to the new one via little metal pins (prongs).

I pushed the two proms together tight, but there seems to be a slight gap still. All the metal prongs enter and go into the old prom. But some not all the way Is it still ok? Is this a problem?

Also, one of the metal prongs on the new prom got bent...but i straightened it back out. It fit in fine. It will not damage the prom if it got bent would it?
Thanks

If you have a problem, you will be rewarded with an SES light. But, from what you describe, I would expect it to be okay.

Glenn, heres something I've been wondering.

When you start your car up, the SES light is SUPPOSED to come on for a brief moment isn't it? THEN it's supposed to go off?

So if it doesn't go off, THATS when you have a bad PROM?

Yes, when you first turn on the ignition (but not cranked) the SES light will go on. Once the engine is started, the SES light will go out. If it does not go out, then you have a problem.

A light remaining on could be a variety of problems, including the prom. Possible reasons can be: poor wiring, bad sensor(s), a bad prom, an improperly connected prom, a bad ecm, to name just a few.

Also, IF you have had an error code, you may still get the light even if the condition no longer exists if the error code was not cleared. I suggest pulling the code and then resetting the ecm. That can done a variety of ways. But since you should double check the seating of your prom, the removal of the ecm from the connectors will clear the code anyways...but make sure you pull the code first.

I should add, that I have accidentally triggered SES codes while burning an eprom. While testing an new set of changes, I tend to leave the BLM min/max values at 128, which can trigger the O2 sensor if my VE tables are out of wack (usually caused by a typo when entering the data).

Also, even when all the tables make "logical sense", I have triggered an SES code (32 - EGR)...because a combination of the changes were not "well received" by the ecm. The GM algorithym just had difficulties with a particular combination that I put together.

Weirdest part, when I tried to re-create those combinations to isolate the problem...the damn thing worked. Go figure.

If you suspect the prom (you probably mean your new one), you should replace it with the original GM prom, to make sure that it truly is the prom and not something else (like a real SES condition).

Hope this helps.
