Bigest cam with MAF
So is it possible to get the classic choppy idle from the old muscle car period? If so what properties would I have to change in order to get it to run without too much trouble?
------------------
'86 TA, T-tops, T-5, 3.73, 4 wheel disks 350, compucam 2040, performer intake,SLP Headers, 3" race magnum muffler, 1.6 Comp rockers, Ripper shifter, perf. friction pads, Hypertech ignition, Earls brake hoses, Hotchkis springs, Tokico Illumina 5 adjustable shocks and struts, Lakewood panhard and trailing arms
14.73 @ 95... traction still a problem

BUT, the *classic* sound is kinda history. You can have a cammed engine sound, but things can get ugly fast. The downside to MAF sensors is that they read airflow in both directions, so if you have any serious / moderate reversion the AFR goes very rich. Also self EGRing becomes an issue more so with MAFs, IMO.
But, there is hope.
Like with the way I have my car tuned the little 206 @ .050 sounds rather radical for v6. But, it is a 0 overlap cam, which is neat for turbo applications.
If you want to run a serious cam, you'll just about have to go to a MAP system.
What still is surprising is someone hasn't spent more time with the 808 cal and running it in a 165 ecm car. ALDL is odd, but, would be easier then the 8D 1227730 conversion

Grumpy, I find it surprising that you recommend the 730/8D for a radical cam instead of MAF? Your reason makes total sense and brings out points I never thought of.
This is quite contrary to what a lot of people believe between MAF and SD. I look forward to responses to this thread.
SlowTA, I've done the "choppy idle thing" when I was younger. Power is what I want now with the smoothest idle possible. To me a choppy idle is the price I pay for power; not something I seek anymore. But to each their own.
Want a choppy idle? Long duration with a narrow LSA to give you a lot of overlap will do it. Some extra lift helps too. I sure hope you don't emissions to contend with this though.

I finally got my LT4 HOT cam engine to idle properly, and it definitely has a choppy idle. So much so, I dont think I like it... It'll grow on me.

I know the sound isn't what really counts today, and yes a smooth idle is rather nice... but my car isn't a daily driver anymore so I was looking for something a little more radical. Yes, I do have to retain and pass an emissions test, so I can't go TOO big. But the compucam I have now just isn't cutting it anymore.
