Remote EPROM
Remote EPROM
Getting the MEMCAL out of my Vette is a real PITA. I think I'm going to be reprogramming a lot, so I'd like to set up a remote EPROM. I figured I'd do this by soldering shielded ribbon cable to the MEMCAL and soldering a ZIF to the other end where I can get to it. I also heard that aluminum foil around the ribbon cable will help shield it from interference. Am I going about this the right way? Where else can I find a good ZIF - digikey is backordered and my local shop doesn't have any and can't order just one? What cable do I use and where can I find it? Digikey has 5 ft of 34 lead shielded ribbon for $15. I only need 1 ft. Again, my local store is little help. Can I cut up an old IDE cable or find something at Best Buy or Rat Shack? Thanks.

I thought about doing this as well but, I thought that the great increase of wire from the chip to the comp may cause some problems be ing that you ar actually increasing resistance.

You might want to use a twisted pair ribbon cable. These are for applications that require a low crosstalk coeffecient. They are used for high speed data connections over a longer distance, like differential SCSI, or SMD devices. Same principle as category 3/5/7
wire - the more twists per inch the less crosstalk on the cable. The only catch is that the pairs are usually matched between individual signal and grounds, which is what (mostly) eliminates crosstalk and interference.
I have a couple of hundred feet of 40 and 60 conductor stuff around if you really need some.
I also have a mix of shielded cables, anywhere from 20 to 60 conductor. The bitch about working with shielded cable is that the shield is molded into the plastic on one side of the cable, and a special stripper is used to remove the shielding where you want to insert a header. I no longer have the stripper, but you can have some of that if you want it.
We still run some old computer iron here at my office, so I have all kinds of odd computer parts

Lee - let me do some more digging around here for cable. I don't want to put you through any trouble unless my other options are exhausted.
Anybody out there have a ZIF and/or header adapter they'd like to part with. Digikey is b/o on the ZIF and Jameco doesn't have the header adapter. And, they'll both cahrge me $5 for the samll order. I know I don't need both, but I like to cover all my bases.
