Please update any new info you have about this problem. I've got my Pocket Programmer, Tunercat, and new MEMCAL, and am waiting for my 29C256 chip in the mail. I was going to have the 29C256 chip soldered into the MEMCAL, but I will buy a 27C256 chip and eraser(was hoping to save $50, plus I like the idea of just "Flashing" the chip as opposed to waiting to erase it)if there is no solution to this problem. Thanks.

Kevin91Z- Did you see the posts in "Can I use EEPROM's?" by Glenn91L98GTA about burning the chip in DOS with Fileprom.exe not Eprom.exe? Hope this might help.

Yes, you must use FILEPROM.EXE since it is the only one that has the AT29C256 defined and you must execute FILEPROM.EXE while in DOS mode. I encountered problems when I tried executing FILEPROM.EXE while in Windows. DOS mode worked just fine.

Well, if any of you are encountering problems when you RE-write to your AT29C256, I think I found a solution.

I too encountered problems when I went to write to the AT29C256 a second time. So I did a lot of experimentation (good think I had a lot of eeproms) and I believe I found a solution.

You need to make your AT29C256 blank again before it will accept a new BIN correctly. I used ERPOM.EXE (set at 27C256) and filled the buffer with Hex FFs. I then saved the buffer as a File and called it "BLANK.BIN".

Then I went back into FILEPROM.EXE and programmed my AT29C256 with BLANK.BIN first and then I did a 1 (B)lank check. It came backed "Erased". I then 2 (P)rogram from File my AT29C256 with the proper file and it worked like a charm.

So program the eeprom with Hex FFs first, then check for Blank and then program it with the file you really want. Everything works perfectly if you do this two step process.

Also, I found change the Eprom Type (option 8) to a 27C256 and then back to AT29C256 (without the eeprom in the programmer) that this seems to help too. But load a "blank bin" with Hex FFs first and then program it with your proper file.

Tell me if it works better.

I'm not using the DOS version, I am using the Windows version I downloaded from Xtronics.

It seems silly to have to "erase" the flash prom before burning it, as that is the whole point of the flash proms. But I'll try it for next time.
