The Compleat (CHEAP)DIY Prom Burning Set Up Questions-->
Ok hello everyone
I am still learning my stuff so if I say anything compleatly dumb you know why.
here goes
Now to be as cheap(college student buget)as I can be I have been learning all I can on this board and am trying to put together a low cost prom burning set up. I am going to use winbin,
the home built ALDL to laptop interface cable(for scan tool)
http://www.mindspring.com/~amattei/nextgen.htm
and the home made eprom burrner
http://home.quicknet.com.au/andrewm/eprom1/
https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/000580.html
Now I have a few questions
on the AlDL cable sites none have a PIC of the PCB do any of you have a board or a map of one, that you could scan and send to me?
The laptop scan tool programs seem a bit complex I have little knowage of this kind of stuff(programing) is there any program that is just a plug and play set up.if not can anyone give me a walk through In laymens terms?
How many of you have used this homemade burnner any info that you got would mean tons to me (tryed Dextron but never got a reply).
does an Eprom where out is a blank new one any better then a blank used one (Ebay has em 9 for 9$ used)?
any help would be great
thanxs
jacob

I can't help you with the DIY equipement as I purchased my Eprom Burner (Pocket Programmer) and my Scan Tool (Diacom).
Yes, eproms do "wear" out. It takes about 25-50 times before they are erased "one time too many".
Basically everytime you erase them, they take a little longer each time to erase completely. My first eprom kind of got screwed up because I didn't monitor the length of time I spent erasing it and I ended up erasing to long in the beginning and it basically "set the stage" for future erases. Eproms basically have a maximum exposure time to UV light, and they develop a "memory" of the minimum length of time needed to erase them similar to a Ni-cad battery.
Before I went to Flash Proms, I found 15 minutes was my "starting time". And then I could erase it 4-5 times at 15 mintues, before I would find that I got a "false SES" code after about 15-30 minutes of driving. I would then increase the UV exposure time by 1 minute and, again, I could erase it 4-5 times before I again got the "false SES" code.
I found this gave me the maximum life on my eprom by erasing them with the absolute minimum amount of UV exposure.
On the DIY scan tool, chat with Craig Moates. I am thinking about giving it a try, but for a completely different purpose. I am currently looking for some free "volatile RAM" addresses on the ECM (hex address 0-7FFF) so I can use them within my changes to the actual 8D code. I need to get a special scan tool that will allow me to modify it so I can display various ECM ram addresses to find a blank one.
