lifespan of 29c256 ??

what is the lifespan of the flash eeprom 29C256? I'm about to order some and would like to know the quantity I should order. How many times can you flash them before they fail?

I don't know if anyone here has had them long enough to kill them off yet.

I'm ordering through insight. The part I want is either AT29C256-12PC or AT29C256-15PC, correct? It probably doesn't make a difference but should I get the 120 nanosecond one?

These things are $4.44 /piece and there is a minumum order of $50. So if there are some people in southern california near me like Kevin91Z who would like to purchase some off me then just send me an e-mail or reply. I only want 3~4 for my memcals so I guess that'll leave the remaining 8~9 available.

I live in Westminster. I'm near the I-405 and the 22 freeway.

you should read this:

https://www.thirdgen.org/tech/promintro.shtml

it tells you what a PROM is and should give you a lot of info as well. A PROM is where the code for the EFI system is stored.

James, why not repost the question as "People wanting to participate in a group purchase in AT29C256s"?

I know the difficulty some people are having in obtaining these. A few people (myself included) have had a problem in dealing with JDR and Insight wants a minimum order.

While I would prefer to see this part of an organized Group Purchase, I realize it is very specific to us DIY'ers.

But if I was looking for some AT29C256s, I wouldn't know it by looking at the title of this post.

As for the specific lifespan? Virtually indefinite as I understand it. Whether there are other factors (like environment) that affect its lifespan, only time will tell. They do have a rated operating heat range but I haven't exceeded it yet. As more of us use these we will know more about their limitations. But so far, I haven't found any. Give us another year or two and we will have more long term information.

Currently, the biggest problem seems to be that some people are unsuccessfull in getting the AT29C256 to work with the PP on certain computers. I know of two currently, and I have a limited problem with one of my two computers.

Do a search on "29C256" on this board as there have been a lot of recent posts on this subject.

I have about 4 quetions I have to resolve before I change my ECM from an 870 to a 165. I don't want to fill up the board with my posts

* I figure I'll get the chips and once I have them then I'll mention about their availability. Besides I think most members scan through most of the posts anyway, since there aren't as many posts compared to the other forums. It takes a special breed to follow everything that goes on in this forum.

I have a few 165 memcals that I'll put a zif and another I'll solder in a eeprom. I have a couple 27c128 eproms as well. Since this is my daily driver failure on the part of the pocket programmer or my wiring is not an option.
