How easy is it to make a prom?

I am thinking about getting the materials for burnnig my own proms. However, a friend tells me that it is really difficult to do, and you have to invest a lot of time in it and you risk a lot of problems burnning your own prom? I know of a friend who has his own shop and charges 300 bucks to burn a custom chip for your car. He finds out what mods you have and tunes you car on the dyno. If you add any mods, he will re-burn you chip for another 50 bucks. So what do you guys think i should do? Burn my own or have him do it on the dyno? Thanks for the info!!!!!

Burning a PROM is easy and takes approx 60seconds.

The testing of your car and learning what changes to make in the PROM to tune things properly is the time consuming part.

Get the stuff and start tuning!

My concern is that i can have a chip burnned for me for 300$ dialed in to perfection and a re-burn for
50$ if i add any mods. Burning my own chip would be cool for future mods', however, I am almost done with my mods. I plan to put a 383 in when it is time. So, its a matter of cost and time. So, how long does it take to have your car dialed in properly?

That all depends on how **** you want to be about getting it "dialed" in. If your worried about numbers, it will take forever if your concerned about good driveability then it won't take a LONG time but definatly months.

Just a thought but it sounds like he's only going to be tuning the WOT settings. That's an easy and good way to tune WOT but how much time are you going to spend at WOT? Now, if he's going to tune the whole spectrum of driveability for $300, that's a deal as this could take quite some time. Of course it depends on the amout of mods (you didn't say) you've done to your car how much time this could take and he could change his price accordingly. Personally, I'd buy the equipment and spend the time. Plus, you could help/charge others once you have mastered the art. It will offset the cost of the equipment many times over.

Hmm? you make a good point. My mods: paxton sc running 8lbs of boost, tes headers, flowmaster 2x cat back system, crane hi 6s boost retard, 1.6 roller rockers, slp runners and ported intake/plentumn and portmatched. How much is it for the whole kit to burn the chips?

Well, I have one more question: what ECM are you using? As far as a kit goes, there is none that I know of. You have to buy the individual components. One more question, have you read the prom burning intro at the top of this page. It has a LOT of info for newbies like us and LOTS of great links to sites that have very accurate and thorough info. Also, there are a few vendor sites for hardware and software. In short, you could buy the prom programmer and get a free editor and maybe some clean proms for maybe $250. Honestly speaking, if you are really new to this you need to take in some info first. You have to do a lot of research and listen to what the experienced guys have to say. Trust me, lurk long enough and the people who know will be easy to tell. I have about 6 years of working on carsd as a pro and I will be taking on my first EFI retrofit hopefully before the end of the year. I've been gathering info now for over 6 months and hope to be ready when the time comes.
