I hooked up a cable to my laptop and the voltage between pins 4 and 5 is negative. Would it be possible to just switch the two wires on the max 233 circuit?? It seems like it will work for power, but what about data transfer??

No, it's working correctly. rs232 normaly goes +/- 13vdc but the spec says it can go as far as +/- 25vdc
