the best program???

OK I will eventually get around to burning my own chip. Now what I have instore for the motor is 1.6 rockers and the 2030 crane cam with the crane High rev kit(or something simalar)
What I have already is a 160 thermo and a polished intake runners. I have a 3.1 and I am looking for a little more pep for right now but want something that can still work well when the other things come into the motor.

Now I am not really "begging" for a prom just the best progeam to run with what I have and for whats coming.

Do you want to know which editor would be most suitable for you, or which BIN file you should start with?

Since you mentioned you have the 3.1 engine, the choice of BIN editor will be fairly easy, you'll need Tunercat with the appropriate TDF file for your ECM.

If you have a look at the chip in the MEMCAL, what is the broadcast code written on it?

From what I see there is no editing software available commercially for the 3.1. If you go over to DIY-EFI.org at incoming and in the archives is a series of postings about programming 101, and how to work out a hac for the ecm your working on.
The only right chip will be the one you modify to fit your application.

The problem with the 3.1 in an F-body is GM used the 404 instead of the 7730 ecm (like GM used in so many other 3.1 V6s. Further, there really hasn't been any 3.1 F-body owners that have gotten into prom burning, so information is really "skimpy" on the 404 and the 3.1 V6.

One possibility maybe to convert to the 7730 ecm and then you can look at using the $8D.TDF by choosing the proper "Cylinder Select". The $8D is thoroughly hacked and very well known. You could pickup a 7730 from a 3.1 V6 Cavalier and you could even look into using that Memcal as it would probably be the closest to your car.

I can't say how different the pinning for the 7730 would be from the 404, but I would suspect it would not be that great. When I get back from my business trip in two weeks, I can take a look at my 1991 GM Shop Manual and tell you the pinning differences between the two (7730 vs 404).

OK, I'm confused. I have worked on a 91 3.1 F car and it had a 730. All the references I have seen show a 730 from 90-92 for a 3.1 F car. Also, I have seen a site somewhere that had a hac for the $88? (I think that's it) and you could make some changes from that. They may be more difficult to change but at least it's something. Maybe you could make an ecu file from that. I know I wouldn't know how to or I would've done so already. What's a 404 ecm?

well I was looking for the best engine performance program. Bin editor? I guess??? I work with P/C's but this car junk is new to me. I know basically how it all works, the chip tells the comp what to do and all...
Thanks for the help...

well the biggest problem with the 3.1 F-body is the sequential injection I think... I can buy chips for it so know they can be made... I just do not feel like spending 200 and up for a chip that may not work with the stuff I have planned on doing to the engine in the future. Thats why I like the Idea of a reprogramable chip. As I change the engine internally I can change the chip to match the upgrades to get more power outta the entire package.

I aslso had another question. Can you "live" tune the chip? meaning have the car running while changing the settings?
