This reminds me of a question I asked back in 2nd grade (or so): "Teacher, now that I can read words, how do I comprehend a book?"
Not that it helps answer your question, but it at least gives you some perspective on the magnitude of your question.
There is lots of information that guides you in "comprehending the book" in the stickies up top in this forum.

You mistakenly believe that I am calling you a second grader. I assure you I am not. What I was getting at is summed up nicely here:
Asking Smart Questions - Third Gen .org : F-Body : Chevrolet Camaro, IROC, Z28, Pontiac Firebird, Trans Am

You can actually do it either way if you have a P4 ECM (1227165, 1227730, etc). Chip reader is probably more common and easier at this point, and it is compatible with all ECMs. To do it with a reader, it is recommended that you get a burner (BURN1 from DIY Fuel-Injection Tools:
Created by an EFI enthusiast for EFI enthusiasts like you! : Moates.Net is highly recommended at $85), and a memcal adapter that allows you to simply pull the memcal and plug it into the burner/read (moates has that as well). If your ECM does not have a memcal (i.e. a C3 ECM), then you simply need to pull the chip from the ECM and plug it into the reader.
To read via the ALDL line (for P4 ECMs), download ECM852 from moates (same link as above). It requires that you run it in DOS mode (boot to dos) if running on Windows XP. Once running and connected to your car, it has an option to dump the image over the ALDL line. If you can't get that working, let me know and I can write a utility that allows you to do this.
We could get more specific if we knew what ECM (or at least year, model, and engine) you are referring to.
