Kudos to Transtronics

Well, I sent back my Pocket Programmer because my programming voltages were incorrect. The Max I could get was 11V, and some chips like the 2732 require 25 to program. I got it back, and EVERY chip that I used to not be able to program, can now be programmed. Including the AT29C256 "flash" PROMS. I don't have to change any of my computer settings either.

I am using Windows 98 on a Gateway computer, The windows version of "wintuner" (latest version at that) and it programs the chips GREAT! Transtronics also "updated" the PP w/ some new parts so that it doesn't "fail" again. All covered under warranty, even though it was well out of warranty.

Two thumbs up to the folks at Transtronics (www.xtronics.com) They take great care of there customers.

Woohoo! Glad that problem is fixed!

I'm having some funky problems, out of the three computers I have, all three will do 27C128 chips, only one will do 27C256 and 29C256, and the other one will do 2732A. Its fun having to switch the programmer around, haha. I think its a computer problem, not a programmer problem, because this is a brand new unit I got on warranty from Transtronics.

...Hmmmm...Mine is brand-new, too - but will only burn 29C256's from straight DOS (Fileprom.exe), not from Win98. The Windows version kept giving an error msg. It's a Compaq laptop. Burns 27C128's just fine in Windows.

Think I have a problem???

Do you have the latest version of the Windows program? I can burn everything from windows: 27C256, 2732, AT29C256, etc... and I have all of my "power saver" settings back to default settings. Its great.

So have you started to play with those AT29C256s?

GLAD you FINALLY got that problem fixed. BTW, when you say the recent verions of Windows PP, do you mean V1.16? I just upgraded to that version and now my Notebook can also program it in Windows virtually perfectly just like Xtronics intended (some minor glitches, but basically works). No more rebooting, going into DOS or Safe Mode. V1.16 is great.

PS: I just upgraded to V1.21 (Xtronics is constantly enhancing and fixing errors). I hope it will fix the occasional glitch I had with V1.16, but I am still happy with the way V1.16 worked overal. Good work Xtronics.

I thought I did...I need to get the password for the latest, then I'll try them...

What are the "Power Saver" settings???

In other news...I just tried the 27C128 (Windows burn) and AT29C256 chips (DOS burn) and they both work OK. I used the "copy /b" command to stack the code in the AT29C256; that seems to be OK too. So, if the new versions don't work in Windows, I can at least use DOS for the Flash chips.

...I thought 1.21 was the latest now???...Karl had emailed me last week with the password for 3.70 DOS and 1.20 Windows, but it doesn't work...

I *think* I'm still using 1.13 Windows and 3.63 DOS...

Yes, I just found out about V1.21. I sent Xtronics an e-mail and Norma sent me a reply in less than 30 minutes on a SUNDAY. They obviously aim to please.

I really like it when a company is constantly refining their products. The Pocket Programmer gets my vote as programmer of choice.

This concerns v1.13, which is the latest I have working...The AT29C256 did not show up in the drop-down EPROM list. How did you get it to work with the Flash EPROMs??? (I'm waiting on the password, just curious about others using the Windows programming software).

Do you have your monitor set to 800x600 (or higher)?

I know that when I tried it on my older notebook that I wanted to use for my Prom Burning stuff, that it could not display higher than 640x480 and I had to set the Windows PP to "small buttons". Then I could see everything.

BUT, when the new version of TunerCat came out, my old notebook couldn't handle the new TunerCat. So I had to move all my Prom Stuff to my newer Compact notebook (which does display 800x600).

The Windows Version of PP works fine now (for displaying everything). I haven't tried V1.21 on my older Notebook to see if this works now, but since TC doesn't work on it, I have'nt bothered.

Just e-mail norma@xtronics.com and she'll fix you up.

Oh boy. 800x600 on a 9 1/2" screen 486dx66 Compaq Contura 410C laptop...I'll have to dig out my magnifying glass...

OK, now I see the slider. (With small buttons). I can't go higher than 640x480. OK; I found the Flash EPROMs! W00t!

But I do have TunerCat 1.72 on it, and it seems to work OK...

My other computer is quite old and also quite slow. I'll just use it in Dos Mode to capture Diacom info. If it gets stolen, no tears.

The Compaq I'll use for everything else.

I just noticed I was doing all of this w/ version 1.10

If you are having problems programing chips, I recomend going into the DOS version, hitting "88" and enter, and it will show you how to measure programming voltages. If its not correct, that can be your problem. Just a few volts can make all the difference.

I was experimenting w/ a 2732 chip, and noticed it takes 25V to program, however, if you set it to 21V, it will still program, but VERY slowly, and will not program at all at 12.5. My programmer was putting out a max of 11V.

Mine didn't. However, it's a moot point here - The Windows 1.21 doesn't work on Flash AT29C256 EPROMs either. Same error msg.

Also, because of the new Setup/Installation procedure, I'm having problems getting into Fileprom.exe in straight DOS. There's some invalid characters in the directory structure. I could (and probably will) change the directory names so I can launch a batch file to run Fileprom.exe, but that means the supplied Uninstall program won't work.

Needs a bit more tuning, I think. (Or else I have a bad programmer). I'm back to 1.13 and 1.63.

Hey, chicks dig it.

I think they change the password for every update they come out with.

The AT29C256 flash chips works great on my PC and Laptop w/ the 1.21

Awesome product. I accidently left some unkown eeprom of some sorts in my programmer when I turned it on. Let's just say that I smelled a nasty burning smell. I unplugged immediatly and tried it out today, works fine. Now tell me that isn't an awesome product.

Did you all get your upgrades from TTronics for free? I did the download from their website, then sent them an email asking for a password. The website says "free software upgrades the first year". I bought my PP in January this year and they said the upgrade costs $49.95. Something about the "new windows software".

What gives?

When I got my PP in December, the Windows Version was just being released and was not included with my purchase. I bought mine when the PP was still $129.95.

I never persued whether I should get the Windows Version or not for free with my PP. I had access to it and it wouldn't work. When they finally got Version 1.16 to work on my computer, then I cheerfully paid the $49.95. I haven't had too much of an opportunity to work with Version 1.21 because of work committments.

I think the issue is whether or not you paid the $129.95 (non-Windows Version) or $149.95 (Windows Version) of PP. I didn't mind paying the extra $49.95 to get a working version of the Windows software. I found it a pain to go back to DOS, fire up Fileprom and then reboot my computer everytime I wanted to reburn a chip.

Talk to Norma or Karl at Xtronics. Maybe toss them a copy of this link to show them that Xtronics has made a LOT of sales thanks to www.thirdgen.org.
