Newb tuning with not so stock motor
Newb tuning with not so stock motor
Kudos to thirdgen.org contributers.
I'm a newbie to the chip tuning and first experiment is a friends 440 Mopar, four barrel Holley TBI, 270ish duration cam engine I would rather not injure!
I have a .bin from a similar cam, tbi, 454 Chevy engine. So that should help. The biggest problem right now is cold start. The engine pings and knocks. I can't go further til this stops.
In a tuning thread I found the Coolant spark compensation table. "The table adds timing during cold engine operation only. If your modified engine has less vacuum at idle, this table is often out-of-spec and contributes to the out-of-spec main spark table for a double-whammy."
So is this my ping/knock when cold? here's a copy of the .bin

Thanks for the help.

Re: Newb tuning with not so stock motor
One item that helps is to use a timing light and double check the 'at-crank' timing. See if it matches what is in the BIN, or what you think the BIN has. You may find that there is something else that is incorrect.
From engine startup there is timing added called choke (really after-start) timing. This decays out over time.
The coolant compensation SA is always in affect. It is just that it is normally zero'd out at operating temperature. Don't forget the bias value for it too.
RBob.
