Newbie... Still have many questions...
Newbie... Still have many questions...
Ok, I know Im limiting who reads this by the title "Newbie" But I know there are some guys out there that remember what it was like to try getting started at all this, and figure some of them could give me a hand....
I read the tech article everyone says to read... Alot of good info but very brief in my opinion. Im looking for more info on what Scanner equipment to buy, as well as how involved the actual process of 2D and 3D table changes is... With a prog like tunercat will it be very hands on and in ENGLISH or are we talking reading binary code etc? Im learning here so could someone recommend some sites to check out and info to get into... I was thinking I would get the AKM cable with some free scanning software or something Currently I have a brand new 383 stroker running on the stock ECM. I believe Im running very rich at idle, and leaning out a bit under throttle... The idle is very rough, and it tends to surge alot between 1000-2000 rpms... I have the LT4 Hot cam in the car 218/228 .525 lift 112ls Can anyone offer to help
Paul
BTW This hot car is a daily driver.... So I really need to get it all straightened out.

There has been a LOT of good posts in the past regarding various tuning issues. Look for "P730" for some tuning tips for SD.
Also, just perusing some of the older posts also address a lot of various subjects that you have probably never thought of.
As for "What the tables look like", TunerCat's TDF have "conversions" so you will work with Temperature settings in Celsius, vehicle speed in MPH, MAP in Kpa, etc. TC is also look at *F conversions, but most of the info in an eprom is in metric...so you are best to get use to it.
Go to www.tunercat.com and you can download a "trial version" of there Bin Editor to see how it functions. On the trial version, you generally only get the TDF for the 7747 truck ECM. But if you talk nicely to TunerCat, they sometimes will give you an older version of the TDF for your car ($8D) so you can see what it is capable of doing.
As for being a "newbie", yes we have all been there. But, we "not-so-newbies" get tired typing the same thing every couple of days. So I suggest reading some of the older posts in this Board as there is a LOT of information there that is unlikely to get "re-typed" unless someone gets ambitious.

I have found ALOT of good info by just doing a 'search' on a topic in this forum(as Glen suggested)...good good good good info.
Also, you might check out diy-efi.org and look at some of their links...but I think Trax put most of the same links in his tech article.
If you are looking for someone to lead you bit by bit through tuning...I doubt if it's gonna happen...just go in swinging..make small changes(I started with fuel...and <cough>haven't gotten any further due to time constraints) and watch your scantool data so you don't go too lean or go too high on spark...Once you get into it, you'll get alot more comfortable on making changes. It's just like anything else...before you get into it, it looks like a daunting task...but isn't that bad...(but you CAN destroy your motor...but if you're careful, you won't)...
Good Luck,
