Spark Advance Vs. Spark Retard
Spark Advance Vs. Spark Retard
Now that I have the knock problem fixed... Back to tuning.
Here's my Q: When knock is sensed, is the computer smart enough to only retard as much as needed or does it over shoot the optimum value?
In other words, If the computer only retards as much as needed, wouldn't this be the optimum timing, advanced to the point just prior to knock (max psi and max power)?
If so... Why adjust the spark tables?
I'm fully aware these Q's may be way out in left field. Looking for guidance.

Well, the computer only retards until the knock is gone, however, it takes more timing to be removed to rid the knock than it did to cause it. That is, if you have knock occur at 36*, the computer will retard it back to say 33* to get rid of it. However, if you edit the tables to 34* in that same cell you may not induce any knock, and are running more advance than what the computer can get by just reacting.

Yeah what he said, but i believe it's bit more drastic than that, make the 33* he said in the last post more like 28*. It takes a LOT more retarding of timing to stop knocking then to prevent it. So no the computer won't find the optimal timing setting using the knock sensor. If the computer could only realize this (remember)and tune it's intial timing by itself, then our jobs of chip burning would not be nesseccary. I don't see why something like DFI doesn't do this, sure costs enough. Give it a wide band 02 sensor, fast sampling rate. Wouldn't be nice to just plug the thing in, start it up and let it tune itself.
