PP2 Help.

I'm sure I must be missing something very simple here but even the advice I've found in a search hasn't got this right!
I'm trying to burn a 4k .bin onto a AT29C256 chip. Following what Ive read I've loaded the buffer with my .bin, set the Buffer start to 00000, Device start to 07000 and the PP2 set the Device end to 07fff. I then hit Programme device. All seems good. I Verify and it says it's all good.
Fit the chip to my '7747 and at ignition on the SES comes on without its usual 'blink' and then stays on when the engine is running.
I've tried 2 different .bins which both worked fine on my Ostrich on 2 different AT29 chips.
So.....what am I missing here?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I don't use the PP2, but can offer some suggestions. If possible program the chips a time or 2 with all FF's. Then burn the actual BIN.

Instead of offset burning try using TunerPRO and creating a 32Kb BIN (called stacking). and program that.

Double check the actual BIN size.

RBob.

An easy way to verify is to read the AT29C256 as the eprom you are expecting it to be (ie. 27C156 if it's for a MAF car .... I can't remember what the original eprom was for the 7747).

You then should be able to see the "data" when you hit "edit" (as long as you make the PP2 read the eprom as the "original" eprom you are trying to emulate).

Sounds like something other then the chip is the issue. Are you putting the chip in correctly? What adapter are you using? If it was solely an issue with how the chip was being burned, you would get a flashing SES, not a solid SES, as the main code is on the integrated ROM in the ECM. Sounds like there is a short somewhere, or something is in backwards. The solid SES indicates that the processor isnt functioning.

The chip is in the programmer correctly and in the ecu. I'm using a zif on a G2(?) in the ecm. I know this is working ok as the Ostrich works fine. When there is no chip or it's in backwards the light blinks fast.
RBob, I'll try the fff thing. I'm having a lot of trouble with using TP for some reason so I'm still using Tunercat at present.

Our of curiosity, what issues are you having with TP?

Everything you outline in your original post seems correct. I have to agree with Dimented - something else is the culprit here, like a bad chip. Erasing the chip (uploading FFs) is a good thing to try, but if you still get failures, I'd try another chip.

I can open my .bins in TP but not do anything with them, if that makes sense. I wanted to use the stacking and offset ability of TP that I'd read about. And if I try to save a bin after I've opened it, I get a message saying that TP has to close...and it does! Everytime I hit save.
It's possibly just me being a noob to this but I thought I was a bit more computer literate than this!!
I'm going to try the fff programme later and see how that goes but I'm not sure what to do about TP.
I'd like to carry on using TC which I understand well and am happy with but I'm about to start using an EBL set up which I believe I have to use with TP?
Oh and I've tried this on 2 chips now.

I've just tried another couple of chips and I get the same solid ses light. This was after filling with fff.
Both times I removed the chip straight away and both were hot to the touch?
Not right surely?

I am going to throw this out there. You say you can't save the bin because TP closes. I would suspect the bin is corrupt. The flashing check engine light indicates a checksum error.

Sometimes you get strange things with TP. Like on WinXP, if you run a bunch of log file playbacks and then open MS-Excel. The arrow key does not change MS-Excel cell locations, it shifts the page instead. These are the little things that you have to work around. TP is a great product and Mark is working out the bugs. Once you use the playback datalogging you will never open TunerCats again.

This is a failsafe way of testing that the bin is correct and that you are loading it wrong with the PP2. You have a 29C256 bin which is 256/8 = 32 Kbytes. You have a 4K bin. That means you can fit 32/4 = 8 of your 4K bins in the 256 chip. Open a MS-DOS command window (black box) and type:

copy /b mybin.bin+mybin.bin+mybin.bin+mybin.bin+mybin.bin+mybin.bin+mybin.bin+mybin.bin newbin.bin

Then load the "newbin.bin" using the PP2 WITHOUT any offsets.
If that works, then you are doing something wrong with offsets. If it does not work, then your bin is bad.

THen the Chip is not correctly socketed.

What definition are you using when you edit your bin?

The bin I've been working from was TC's asdz_42 .bin.
As for the chip not being socketed properly, the zif on my ecm is a 28 pin/socket one so I can't get that wrong, even with my noob-ness!
My Ostrich works perfectly in this zif so I'm assuming I soldered the adabtor below the zif in correctly.

Junkcltr, as for opening in ms-dos I'm afraid that's way beyond me! I'm an old motorcycle mechanic, not a computer expert! I'll look into that and see if I can figure it out. Thanks anyway.

What definition were you trying to use in TunerPro, though? The bin doesn't so much matter to me.

You can certainly get the chip insertion wrong. You could put the chip in backwards, which could do a lot of damage, and you could offset the chip by a row by accident. Care should always be taken there.

I haven't been able to use TP for this. I assume you mean the XDF? The only XDF I have is for the EBL which I intend using soon. This is why I've done everything in TC so far and I've no idea what 'definition ' that uses.
Where could I get the proper 'definition' from?
Sorry to seem so dumb but I'm pretty new to all this.
I am sure however that the chip was inserted properly so I'm still confused about why it would get so hot so quickly.

Is this with the chip in the ECM or the programmer? I do know that inserting them backwards gets them hot real fast. On the ECM the notch goes toward the middle of the ECM.

On the programmer it stays cool, notch towards the lever as diagrammed on the PP2. I did accidentally put the chip in wrong once some time back and just got a rapid flashing light.
I'll go through the whole lot again from the beginning methodically and see. You know how it is sometimes when you're looking too hard and overlook the obvious. All I want to do is burn a usable chip for my '7747 so I can use it as a back up if I run into problems with setting up the EBL properly.
I'll have another crack at it tomorrow at work hopefully. Thanks guys.

Well....you know the saying, 'can't see the wood for the trees'?
I've been trying to think of a good excuse for being so stupid but can't so it's time to be a man and confess.
I went over everything, following what you all had told me and realized that as the PP2 had the chip cut out towards the handle, I'd been putting it in the ecm this way too. Even though I had previously been putting them in the correct way.
Truck runs fine now thanks. What an idiot. How small do I feel??
Thanks for your help. I'm just going to go into the corner hurt myself for a while now.
