Question about a "custom" chip

Maybe this is going to sound dumb and maybe not but here is my question.

I am buying a custom chip for a good price and the guy I am buying it off of says that he had it programmed for his 5.7L IROC. The mods he had done were as follows when he dropped it in:

- exaust with headers
- no cats
- ram air with K&N
- air foil
- ported plenum
- shift kit.

My car will have the following mods before I drop in the chip..

- no cat (with a free flow muffler)
- air foil
- K&N filters

He said that when I put his chip in my car the chip will recognize the configuration of what my engine is running like (ie: air flow, exhaust, etc etc) and adjust itself. The more I drive the car the better it will respond.

Is this true? please excuse my ignorance on all this as I am new to the "custom chip" thing... but I am learning

Oh yeah.. he said he will be sending me the complete EPROM...ie: the blue case, with MEMCAL attached. I guess whoever programmed it for him removed the eprom, programmed it and put it back in. I don't have a reason to doubt this guy and I am pretty sure he is being honest with me.

Imagine buying a Holley, and a distributor from you local shop. Imagine expecting them to have the right fuel curve, and timing curve for your car with no adjustments. Well it run, yes, will it run it's best?, most likely not. The only way to get the best possible chip for your car, and your driving style is to learn how to do your own.

Ok...all understood... and I am going to be looking into learning myself so at the very least I have a complete "swap in" to play with.

Anyway... my question is " Will an ECM "learn" as you go?" ... Is there anything in it that will compensate on the fly?

The Block Learn Mode is NOT a form of Artificial Intellegence. The best I can say about the BLM from reviewing the code is it is stores the last particular setting in a 16 cell table based on a particular RPM/gmSec aifflow (for MAF). The ECM will then read this value the next time it has a particular combination of RPM/Airflow (MAF) to get to the proper fuel setting quicker.

I haven't read enough about the MAF code of the Block Learn Mode routine to tell you if it uses the "table" when in Power Enrichment, but on SD cars usually those cells aren't attainable in normal closed loop and hence useless and would not be set in Power Enrichment.

I find the BLM is more useful for "part-throttle" driving than WOT. I also found that altering the "boundaries" to allow you to utilize more of the BLM table (stock I found it would tend to lump a lot of the typical values in just a couple of cells).

If the BLM was that "clever" then no one would ever have to get a new eprom. Also, the BLM does NOTHING for spark and all the other paramaters. If the chip is off, all the "driving" in the world is not going to make the ECM run "better"; you NEED a new eprom with a proper calibration.

Lastly, I spend a far greater amount of time "optimizing" my spark advance than "optimizing" my fuel tables.

PS: This is for the BLM in OUR cars. The newer PCMs have more "function" in the BLM, but they completely different than our ECMs.
