ScannerPro and 8d bin thread for tuning.
All for those of you running SAJP or another $8d bin if you have not downloaded ScannerPro and started tuning with it then you need to. It seems that RBob has the TBI guys covered with his embedded lockers which I have not been paying attention to because I don't run a TBI. I am not ruling those guys out but for us 727/730 SD guys this is what we have needed for a long time. For those of you that have not looked into ScannerPro you need to realize that this is a paradigm shift in capabilty. This puts us OBDI guys on par with the newer tuning softwares that the LS1 guys are running with EFILive and some of the others. Histograms allow us to take a run and average out whatever we are interested in. As JP commented it also allows you to create a analog gauge that will open your eyes to what is happening. It also allows you to spot trends like never before. The intent of this thread is to share ideas on how it has helped your tune so that others can benefit from it.
Because it is never said enough. A special thanks to Mark for bring this to us. I already have comments/ideas on the software but that is future stuff after you release this. Also thanks to JP you are always the one that is involved with the initial work that we capitalize on. Thanks for the ADX file that got me going because I never would have done a thing with it since there was no documentation for ScannerPro.

Idle tuning
Here is my first experiences with ScannerPro. I have been working on my idle parameters ever since I went to a LT1 intake and AFR heads among other things. My cam stayed the same but I went to 1.6 roller rockers. Fast forward to ScannerPro and how much this has helped my tune:
Idle History: I just idle the car from stone cold to closed loop which starts a 70 degrees C. I have set my IAC to be around 30 steps, adjusted my O2 constants down, opened up the bleed hole in the throttlebody, increased my cold start idle, etc in an effort to get my car so that it would not stall when cold and putting it in gear or maxing out my turning radius. Note I have had tunes that I had no problems with and then I do something seemingly unrelated and my idle goes to hell. My AFR's have ranged from very lean to very rich and it has been difficult in the past to spot just why.
With ScannerPro I was able to spot trends and problem areas that I just did not see.
First Run:
While idling I notice that my car all of a sudden sounds very different. I made a mental note of it happening around 45 degrees C. On playback I noticed at 45 degrees C my timing goes from get this 35 degrees to around 28 on the analog gauge for Spark Advance. I also notice my car is much leaner than expected part of this is the overlap of the cam so I want to be careful here.
First chip burn I add around 7% gas across the board and find my Timing Vs Load Vs Temp removes 9 degress at 45 degrees C so I adjust this table also.
Second Run:
Idle is much smoother stone cold but still has the intermittent stall. I develop some histograms to show the difference between Commanded AFR and Actual AFR. I use this to adjust my tables. Stone cold my commanded AFR's go from below 10 to Stoich very quickly. Actual AFR's are about 3 off to 1 at temp. For example Comanded 10 actual 13 and commanded 14.7 and actual 15.7. At temp I take the average AFR's and Commanded AFR's and readjust the VE table accordingly.
Third run:
Car is much stronger at cold start and no stalling (so far). AFR's at temp match the commanded AFR's within .2. Some very cold commanded AFR's still off but much closer. I develop a histogram of the average steps Vs temp and reset my IAC steps to match the average. Some temps are 20 steps off. Next run I will report my findings.
I hope that this little explaination will get the user community excited and get the ball rolling to start tuning with ScannerPro.

I've made a definition for my TBI PCM (8192 Baud with MAF) but am having connectivity problems. Will stay connected from anywhere between 8 and 90 seconds then drop out. Otherwise the readings are fine.

I just recently looked into Scannerpro. Ive got a 1993 Typhoon running code $59, closed loop wideband. I was sent one adx file, which didnt work. It says its connected but the data is all messed up. On the code 59 website there is an adx file, but I get similar messed up data. I would love to use scannerpro but so far Ive been unable to. If anyones got a good $59 file please send it my way- SBNova@Yahoo.com
I only wish I had the computer know how to make an ADX myself.
I'll keep an eye on this thread to see how you guys are utilizing this new software. I think it looks great, and should help solve alot of problems with those selectable histograms.

This does sound great. I saw Mark's first post on what he was working on, and have tried to follow it.
I got side tracked on my OBDII project, but I've got to start datalogging my TPI 40 Chevy also this spring.
I'll try scannerpro instead of my Tunerpro.

Cool thread guys. Sorry that I've been so dormant lately. I'm not gone, I swear! Just... very busy (but not complaining).
Does anyone have trouble logging with Scannerpro? I had alog file saved that Ive viewed a few times, I think I labeled it "idle.(something)". So yesterday I decided to do a little log, and when I was done I thought I had it all saved. Later when I tried to pull it up it had my new label- (drive around.something), yet when I reviewed it, the data was the same as my "idle" file. So it seems that nothing from my "drivearound" file was stored.

Try looking on your desktop for a temp file. ScannerPro seems to have issues with file naming. From what I see there are issues with file length and with other characters like - and . but you need to confirm that. Also be careful on some of the definitions. I have found errors on the MAT and the WB Actual AFR for 8d. I am using a modified JP definition that he started with from ScannerPro.

Now then, since people seemed to find it so confusing in TunerPro that they must first select a file to log to before beginning a log, in ScannerPro I decided to log to a default (temp) file, then prompt the user for the filename/location after they hit stop. Under the covers, ScannerPro simply moves/renames the temp file to the target destition/name.
If that process goes awry, that could explain the issues you're seeing. You might also have simply opened the temp file, which may have contained stail log data.

Mark just a personal preference here or at least I am used to it. I prefer the naming of the file first. I just happened upon the temp file on the desktop after trying to figure it out. I got scared I lost my data like LogWorks which does the same thing but allows you to lose your data if you go through the menus too quickly.

Try checking your setting for the MAT note it should be x not X and you need to use the temp lookup table. I spent 2 days trying to figure out what was wrong.

I'm not sure about the X or x thing but it will display something like "(x)native" in the grey box when correct.
For the playback issue, use the "Play" and "pause" buttons. The stop button issue is known and will cause some machines to use allot of resources. If you don't touch the stop button, everything works ok. If it doesn't start right away or stops aftera frame or two, just bump pause, then play.

Yeah, I did check the box to use the lookup table, and I checked and there is a lookup table present. While playing back a log, it made no difference. I will have to check that other "X" or "x" thing.
Putting the "x" in, and having the box checked to use the lookup table makes my MAT gauge read in F, although I havnt compared it to Tunerpro yet. In C, its still pegged at 140 degrees ( I have that set as max), so I guess that calculation is off.

I checked the temps and they appeared to be valid if you are using the supplied lookup table. A sanity check would be to start logging on a stone cold car. Your MAT and Coolant temps should be almost identical and your MAT will increase more slowly than the coolant temp. The coolant temp is not using the lookup table but a calculation so again it should be a good test.

How did you input actual AFR from your wideband with Scannerpro?
I am using the 8D wideband hack that puts the data out to Min IAC word 52 with a innovate sensor.
