Has GM lost their mind?? $300+ for an 8D MEMCAL!

The other day I was online looking to get a PROM/MEMCAL for my 8d project and GM Parts Direct is over $300 for the darn thing! They were $50 last year? What happened?
This changes a lot... I did a search on trying to update the MEMCAL from a PFI V6 to the V8 and couldn't find anything.
Has anyone either had luck documenting the resistor values which signal V8 and knock sensor filters?
Any thoughts on finding another MEMCAL from a v8 truck or 91-93 car v8 app and switching the PROM to the AUJP code? I know that I'm not gonna find a 90-92 F-body/Y-body MEMCAL in the j-yard.

Re: Has GM lost their mind?? $300+ for an 8D MEMCAL!

The path of least resistance is likely a j-yard (or E-bay) V8 ECM/memcal + adapter and just burn the calibration onto a chip. The stuff is out there, just have to do some leg work look for it. Either that or suck it up and buy the memcal. You could look for other venders on the 'net as well. Sometimes these big online warehouses carry this stuff. Try autopartsgiant.com. Ive gotten new L1E calipers from them for a fair price even when others where out of stock. They have LOTS of NOS GM stuff.

Here you go. They list the AUJP as one of the applicable codes.

It will be discontinued. Its how GM works it as the pieces become fewer and fewer and even less moved in the market.

You might try www.tpiparts.net.
He usually has them, sometimes used.
Forget that, 125.00 for new and 65.00 for used.
I just looked it up.

New from autopartsgiant was cheaper than the used price you posted. Buy spares because you can always sell them for more later on. That is how it goes with NOS GM parts.

One of the reasons I'm doing my next project with OBDII stuff is this problem, fact.
Some stuff is getting hard to get.
I've bought up 5 305 memcals, 5 350 memcals, 9 730 ECM's, and an extra harness to hold me over, as I have 3 TPI streetrod projects now running.

How much is that OBDII software going to cost ($500)? More than a MEMCAL?
There isn't much source code out there for OBDII so the info. for tuning is more guess work.

Mid-90's OBDI ECMs are still less than $50 with a 5.7 liter MEMCAL.

Do not make the mistake like I did and order from them. Their customer service is incredibly bad, they basically just hang up on you when you ask where your parts are. They charged my card right away and a week and half later still havent even processed never the less shipped it. Check out autopartsgiant.com on ripoffreport.com, theyre a bunch of crooks!

I wish the person would have never posted that link

I use them constantly. Theyre the only show in town for most of this stuff. The customer service has been Ok so far. Shipping is a little slow, but the parts arrive as expected. This isnt directed toward anyone here, but in this day and age it seems that everyone expects everything RIGHT NOW and when that doesnt happen, they get pissed. Me personally, Im just happy to have a vendor that has the parts I need, even if it takes some time to get it.

You might try emailing them as well. They ship slow as molasses in the middle of January. So far, though, Ive yet to not recieve a part Ive ordered. My recent order (bunch of electrical connectors and some junk for my daily driver) took close to three weeks to finally arive.

Good info. GMPartsdirect.com tends to take about 3 weeks on some stuff too.

That doesn't quite match up with the incredible amounts of bad reports you can find online of people not ever getting what they ordered or getting their money back. When I called to inquire about what was taking so long he told me the process takes and I quote, "slightly less then forever". He was a total douchebag and would not give me any answers. Then he just hung up. Funny thing about it is every time you call its the same guy, but he has a different name. What a crook. Ill be ordering a memcal from tpiparts and wont make that mistake again.

Anyways, read for yourself:

http://www.my3cents.com/showReview.cgi?id=24816

http://www.complaintsboard.com/compl...om-c18632.html

http://www.complaints.com/directory/...ober/25/33.htm

http://www.sickofbeingscrewed.com/read_screws.cfm?ID=89

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/AutoPartsGIANT

But hey, what do I know.

And FYI I dont expect things RIGHT NOW, but two weeks to process a single item order is RIDICULOUS. Any other place can do it in a day or two. Its also well known that you should not be CHARGED for the order until it is ready to ship. This guy charges you as soon as you place the order then makes you sit around with your thumb up your *** until he maybe decides to send you something.

The SD memcal listed there seems to be for a 305 ci where as the autopartsgiant memcal was for a 350ci

Yes, they should not charge before shipping. If you read the cancellation policy you can cancel any time before you receive the "payment accepted" email. Although, they really did accept payment earlier without you knowing explicitly.

I don't think they have a warehouse there and wait around on shipping. I think shops like these search around for NOS stuff and ship if they can find it or cancel your order if they can't. They also make interest of the money that they hang on to for a while.

I agree that they are a bunch of SOB's, but they do deliver, even if it takes time. I even managed to get a box of new 1LE calipers from them when everyone else was sold out...

Junk is right about them probably not having a warehouse. The stuff I get from them is always repackaged. Regardless of what everyone else says, as long as they keep delivering the goods, Ill keep buying.

THat is crazy, I can get NIB memcals for $200. Paid $70 about 7 months ago(on a project car). That is what I get for having my formula down for over two years...

Has anyone found an alternate source? I too used AutoPartsGiant, and never received my part. Going through the Paypal complaint process now.

Id be willing to bet that they may not be able to locate them. Have you tried emailing/calling them? Ive had issues before where they couldnt locate teh parts. Just canceled teh order and that was that.

Edit: Its surprising that people are having issues with them. I have 20-30 orders with them, and I couldnt be happier with their service. Maybe they hate new customers. It would be a shame for them to go away, because Id be SOL without them.

Hey guys, also having a hell of a time with AutoPartsGiant... I ordered the memcal with the link in this thread AWHILE AGO.

They cancelled my order, and that's fine... but they're still sitting on $60.00 of mine and don't appear to have ANY notion to refund me. I'm calling my bank tomorrow.

For the past few weeks the sales guy says "it is on the dock waiting to ship....still no tracking number." 3 weeks later when the order is cancelled they say that the order has not shipped, but the order can't be cancelled. Paypal and credit cards take care of businesses like that for you.

They may be a good place for stuff other than AUJP MEMCALS, but they don't have any AUJP items ready to ship.

Thats what I would like to know as well. I have the G1 Adapter and it "bypasses" the memcal so I would assume that I would be fine, but you know what they say about assuming... I also have to buy an ecu, are all 1227730's equal?

It looks like I have been the victim of the same scam by Autopartsgiant.com. Credit card charged immediately, order never processed. No reply to email. I plan on trying to dispute it through my credit card company, but what a pain-and still no parts. I wish I had seen all this first...

Re: Has GM lost their mind?? $300+ for an 8D MEMCAL!

I called Bank of America / MBNA and put the payment in dispute. I was told it will take 6-8 weeks. What a hassle. I'm not as concerned about the actual money (about $100) as I am autopartsgiant.com continuing to get away with ripping people off. I tried calling and as soon as I told them I was inquiring about a current order, the call taker just sighed and hung the phone up before I could say anything. This appears to be their M.O. if you look at sites like ripoffreport.com. I hope no one else from here orders from them and has to go through this.

Re: Has GM lost their mind?? $300+ for an 8D MEMCAL!

Raaa I just cannot seem to get my hands on one of these mythical AUJP chips. I even bought one from a member on here who then sent me a v6 chip. woohoo.

Why are these things so hard to come by Im pulling my hair out just trying to get my GTA to run! Im on my last straw before I get a megasquirt instead.

Re: Has GM lost their mind?? $300+ for an 8D MEMCAL!

Their parts sure seem cheap, but they have extremely poor business practices that are probably illegal. They will not cancel an order when you tell them to.........then they see a dispute on the payment........so they change the order to shipped. Of course, no tracking available for days after being "shipped". Days later they say it is "out of stock" and can't be shipped so they canceled the order (even though the buyer canceled it a week ago) and it has already "shipped". Also, they say it has been fully refunded which is completely untrue. Dishonest business model.

EDIT: It would seem to be cheaper to go to the 427 ECM (or variants) for a 350ci than using a 730 ECM if you don't have a MEMCAL for it. You can buy a complete 427 ECM with 5.7ci MEMCAL for $40 - $60. Maybe the 427 ECM MEMCAL has the same pinout as the 730 ECM MEMCAL for the CAL chips?

Nah, I don't think I got screwed over. It is just that they try to sell parts without having them. Sometimes it doesn't work in their favor. That is what happened here. Besides, $53 for a MEMCAL that goes for over $200 now. It really is almost too good to be true. Some of us took the chance and came up short. It happens. I am glad you posted that link. At least I got a chance.

Has anyone actually seen their card get refunded for the company induced canceled order? Seems like they like to charge for non-shipped parts.

Re: Has GM lost their mind?? $300+ for an 8D MEMCAL!

I called the AC Delco dealer in Chattanooga and asked price and availiblity of AXYC memcal, and they said about 3 days to order and 73.00. I haven't order it yet, but they've gotten me at least 8 in the last 5 years.
