The car had a 305 TBI that blew up. It is a 1991 Caprice Classic. So I got a 350 out of a suburban. I put on all the TBI equipment on the 350 and have it dropped in. I am now starting to work on the computer. I was wondering what I need to do to make it work. I have a 350 ESC, and i am going to be getting a new knock sensor. I think I am going to program the EPROM myself. I was wondering what do I all need to get started. It is easy to find this kind of info for a camaro or vette, but nothing for a caprice. If anyone could help, it would be great.

Re: 305 to 350 Caprice Swap
I don't know which ECM the Caprice used in 1991. It could be either the 8746 or the 6965, the $61 or $62 code. I have definition files and bins for both. The rest of the necessary tuning equipment is the same as a TBI camaro/firebird or TBI Van, Truck, Suburban, etc.

It is the 6965 ECM. I pulled off the ECM tonight and checked it to make sure. I can't seem to find much for bin files or definition files.

Go to TunerCat, if only to find out the info you need.

Re: 305 to 350 Caprice Swap
Well I ordered the definiton file from tunercats. I was wondering if anyone had a bin file of the cop car chip. I am looking at getting the 68lb/hr injectors bucause it still has the 305 injectors. I should have everything I need to complete the swap, unless I missed something.

Re: 305 to 350 Caprice Swap
The only problem you will have is the same one I'm having on my '91 Caprice wagon, right now there is no program to log data from the 6965 ECM.
Both TunerCat and TunerPro support the ECM and do a nice job allowing you to edit the bin, but without data logging the editing doesn't do you much good.

The Winaldl logging program doesn't support this ECM directly but will display some data if you set it to the 16144288 ECM, but unfortunately it doesn't correctly log MAP or temperatures correctly, so you can't use it to tune. My efforts to try to convince the WINALDL developer to add support for this ECM haven't gotten anywhere, even after offering some economic incentive (I guess $100. doesn't buy much anymore).

Datamaster also doesn't support this ECM directly, although there is an outside chance that setting it to one of the other supported ones could give valid data.

TunerPro RT in theory will log from the 965 ECM and the $62 interface file is available for this from the Moates website, but unfortunately it currently has some problems interfacing with the ECM correctly and you get lots of errors in the data. I've been in contact with the developer about the problem and he claims in a couple of weeks he should be able to get it functioning, so when that happens I'll post that news back here.

If anyone else knows any other alternatives to log from the 965 ECM please drop it on us.

.
Diacom can read all GM ECMs prior to 1995. Unfortunately, it's pricey and only works in DOS mode.

Go to www.rinda.com for more info.

Reaper, thanks for the tip on Diacom, if I was in a hurry I might give it a shot, but I can wait the couple of weeks for the TunerPro RT package to be fixed for the '965 ECM. It looks pretty slick, gives you heads up displays that you can set to monitor any value of your choice.
