lurker, finaly signed up, couple 165 questions

hello there! ive already printed out all the tuning articles, and they have been my "bible" for the past few months... now is question time..

i already have all the moates goodies to tune and datalog, along with my WB02..

now i learned that i am using a 165 cpu along with a MAF sensor. from what i gather almost everyone is switcing to $6E from the stock mask.. do i have to do this? id rather tru to run a close to what my cars cpu was ment for.. also if i kept to the stock mask, which one of the bins should i start with.. all that ive done to my car is a built tranny and cam, a big one for tpi. along with running 10* advance base timing, (i know ill have to tune for that) and about 50spi of fuel pressure. (do i have to tune that also)?

im sure that i will end up using $6E for more tuning options, if i do that what .bins work with that i searched and all i found was arap, wich by the SA looks to be for a car with aluminum heads. maybe even a manual tranny

simple stuff first i suppose, ill get into the maf table and duch once i figure out what to put onto the chip.
o yeah, i down loaded tunerpro RT is this the best to use?

thank you sooo much!

Welcome! I'm sure you'll find this forum to be a WEALTH of information (like I have).

You should fill out your profile and / or update your signature to include all pertinent information about your car, engine, trans, rear, mods, etc. This will help everyone help you.

You definitely do not have to switch to a $6E mask. There are a lot of guys running fine with the $32 / $32b masks. If that is where you feel most comfortable starting, then no problem. Start with the stock bin for your car and work from there, based on the engine mods you made (larger injectors?, base timing change, etc). 50 psi of fuel pressure is a bit on the high side (was that with the vacuum hose on or off of the AFPR?), so you may need to compensate for that in other areas of the tune.

Yes, arap is a bin for a 350 with aluminum heads. If you have iron heads, the SA will likely be too aggressive, but with your cam (depending on specs), maybe not.

I use TunerPro RT and really like it, along with the AutoProm and my wideband.

Good luck!

Re: lurker, finaly signed up, couple 165 questions

hello again, ill update sig soon. im runing a 350 with iron heads that have beed opened to 2.02/1.60, i have msd distributor coil and wires, cam is a compcams, im not sure of exact number, but its around .480 lift, 111 lsa. id have to look at build sheet. trans is a "built" 700r4 and as for stall i belive its about 2800 i have the car running on a stock tune, but is pig rich and sluggish. im not sure what to do for base spark? also fuel pressure vaccume line is hooked up should i capp it? sould i run less than 50? also if i use the 32b (for my 88) should i try the Aujm file i saw or something elese? thank you for your help, ive always paid people to do things for me and i really want to lear how to do it on my own...

Re: lurker, finaly signed up, couple 165 questions

I'd stick with the stock SA table for now and concentrate on the fueling.

It could be rich for a number of reasons. Are the injectors the stock size? If not, you should change the injector constant to match the flow rate of the injectors. Larger injectors + stock injector constant = rich.

I think the fuel pressure is high, especially if that is what you set it to with the vacuum hose connected. At WOT, the fuel pressure would be even higher than 50 psi (assuming the rest of the fuel system can support it). I would set the fuel pressure at 42 psi with the vacuum hose disconnected and work from there. This will also help the rich condition.

Gotta run - I'll check back tonight...

Re: lurker, finaly signed up, couple 165 questions

ok, so when i open tunerpro rt, i should select the $32b mask, and what bin... ill search moates for the stock one, but any help for a newbie id apreciate in locating it. i was told that the timing is set at about 11* advance, should i take that back some or leave it alone? (i know that i need to change base in tune)

next, i am running the stock injectors and rails and pump. if i disconnect the vacume i assume i need to cap it at both ends (plenum and fpr) oh yeah, i have the holley adjustable regulator.

Re: lurker, finaly signed up, couple 165 questions

Just adjust the regulator to the right fuel pressure with the vacuum disconnected. Once it's set to 43psi, reconnect the vacuum to your regulator for normal usage. The vacuum is needed to keep the pressure across the injector at a constant, even though a gauge will show it drops with vacuum.

Reducing your pressure setting (disconnected) from mid 50's to 43 should help lean it by about 14%, and should help the full throttle power a bit, because the factory tune is set a little bit richer than "rich best torque", and the extra enrichment from too high pressure is not helping at all, obviously. A MAF setup should get your engine running close to normal without a lot of work, as long as all the hardware is good, and that the flow rate in the chip matches the actual flow rate of your injectors.

One thing to check during this is to be sure your regulator isn't leaking fuel through the vacuum line. That can add a lot of fuel and cause all sorts of problems.

I'll second that. My Holley AFPR was a nightmare. It leaked.

No, just the ADS definition loaded in the logging preferences.

To clear that for you, the XDF is for editing the bin file. Your done editing and now wish to see the results of that by logging the operation. Only need the XDF to tell you what you're changing in the bin file.

Your '165 ECM will interface properly with the $6E mask and bin, so no need to change it

Re: lurker, finaly signed up, couple 165 questions

thanks. im having issues now. im thinking it may be injector related. while driving on stock tune it will be pig rich then out of no where it will be way too lean and almost kill the engine. i am using stock from 88 injectors with extreem amount of miles on them.

once i swap to $6E what bin would you sudjest once again im thinking of arap, but not sure yet
