HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
ok Ive been over at the DFI and ECM forum and decided to move it over here.
Im using TunerPro RT and have my cable and Brun1 from Moates. and I have the expanded 6E loaded.
Im still trying to grasp everything about prom tuning but its so much!!! and for a newbie to understand about address and hex codes and all that stuff it just way over my head so far.
Ive been around here for awhile and Im sure alot of you have seen my post with all the engine problems Ive been having...thats a different story.
So now in my spare time Im trying to do something with the chip that I purchased from LSRacingships.com rather than have to come up with the money for a dyno tune.
I was able to read my current chip and have a few questions?
When reading the chip, do I have to do anything with the "chip addressing" and Buffer addressing" or just leave it at what ever comes up when choosing my chip which is the 27SF512
I read my chip and what I have come up with looks like nothing that anyone has posted about
Can some of you guys explain to me what it is Im looking for to get started? All the threads and stickys are not really in plain english..it to much technical talk...which I have a hard time understanding.
Heres a copy of my LSR chip...does it look normal?..Im thinking not I need some serious help cause I think this chip is screwing my motor up.
Compared my bin to let just say the arap.bin and my bin looks nothing like that one...MY BIN is so screwed up....

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
I'll stick my head out and see if it gets chopped off because I'm pretty new too. I use the Auto Prom and TP. You may have not read the chip correctly. Tuner Pro sets the addresses automatically if you choose the correct chip in the pull down menu. I looked at your file and it appears to have nonsensical numbers in it so I think it's either read wrong or programmed wrong. Your chip is 64k in size, bytes, so it's address ranges from 000000 to 00FFFF. This is the chip address. The ARAP bin only needs 16k so I believe Tuner Pro places and my Auto Prom programs it at the end of the chip from 00C000 to 00FFFF automatically. Tuner Pro should store a read bin in the buffer from 000000 to 003FFF. There are hex calculators online that will convert to dec to demonstrate the above.
I know it's hard but it's just like hot rodding a carbed car, you gotta fight with it and get it wrong bunches of times before you start to figure it out. A MAF car is not that bad, just difficult to figure the idle out, still struggling with that.
Go to Moates and read a bunch of his articles like
http://www.moates.net/documentation....entation_id=20 make sure you have the right aldl file loaded etc.
The ARAP bin is not a bad place to start with your mods. Wish I had your AFR heads.

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
thanks for the reply, I read the link that you posted and that has to do with writing to the chip, correct? now, with reading the chip, alls I didnt was hit read and then saved the buffer and this is what I have. Reading the chip Im guessing that TP automatically determines the address and buffer so I dont have to do anything there.
I practiced writing the arap to my blank chip and it automatically choose the right chip address and buffer cause they matched the numbers on that link.
so im guess im good there.
I didnt program the chip that I have now. I payed for that from LSRchips.com
Chip tuning and apparently reading and writing is not for the beginner and hell directions dont even tell a novice how to do anything step by step.

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
Something else to be aware of. The ARAP is an 89 MAF Automatic bin with a 6E definition file. Your car is an 87 so there are some issues you may or may not be aware of. Forgive me if you already understood this. 87 has a 32B def file. Make sure you have the correct datastream file .ads, correct definition file, .xdf loaded in Tuner Pro. 32B for an 87 not 6E from an 89 165 ARAP BIN. So if you have a 6E loaded and you have a $32B I would think that in itself creates the reading errors your text file shows. Did the chip for your car get programmed as an 87 MAF or 89?

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
My chip was written for an 87 MAF car by then tuner.
I cant find the correct $32b ads and the xdf files...I can only find 1.
I didnt think that has anything to do with reading....only editing and programming.
Afte doing some searching I also found that alot of the MAF guys are able to use the 6e files..the only differnence is SD vs MAF everything else is the same?
I dont know..IM LOST!

WHere can I find the correct $32b ADS and th correct $32b XDF files? Tunerpro does not have both. I can find the ADS but not the XDF.
hope that makes sense

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
Kinda curious about that myself. I'm just getting started
with my APU1 and TPRT.
I'm running the 6E and ads in TPRT and reads my 128-
256 and 512 chips correctly, same car,same 165 ecm.
Also found that the ABWN bin is what my 87 A4 L98
Iroc came with if that helps.
Running a PcFormless starter chip and trying to learn
as fast as I can. Can read and datalog but editing and burning next.

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
hey thanks for the xdf file...WOW the $32e file has nothing compared to the $6e files. Theres ony like half the stuff. I think its ok to use the $6e but anyway..
That has nothing to do with reading chip. It still comes up the same.
Now what could I be doing wrong? Reading chips and saving the file doesnt seem that hard. I have followed the directions for reading and it say nothing about changing the buffer or the address. I even tried that and re-read the chip and it still comes up the same.
Could my Brun1 be messed up? Yes Im putting the chip in correctly on the burner. I can load, blank check, erase, save and verify.
But apparently cant read or write. I dont even know if I can write to the chip cause I wrote the arap bin to my blank chip and tried it in my car and it started but shut off about 10 secs later. I then read it and pulled it up with TP and it read the same as my other chip.
SO what am I doing wrong? DO you think there may be a way for the tuner to have locked his chip? THat doesnt make sense cause the other chip read the same.
I DONT KNOW!
I even did this to setup the Burn1 http://www.moates.net/documentation....entation_id=16 and changed my Comm Ports to 2 cause the Burn1 went to 6 and re-read my chip again and the same THING!

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
I'll look and see what I can find for 32B. If you have the wrong XDF when you read your bin on Tuner Pro you will have garbage on your screen and addressing incorrect. That is how I understand it. Yes people do use 6E but if I understood your comment correctly make sure that you know that 6E is not speed density it is a MAF. 8D is speed density and uses a different ECM. The difference between 6E and 32B is in the cold start injector it is missing from 6E and made part of the 6E cold start fueling. I will look through what my settings are in TP and yes reading normally it is an automatic thing if everything is set right. If chips are not burning or reading correctly and won't run your car something in your settings are off. You can run the ARAP bin with a 6E xdf and 165_6E .ads when you program and data log. You will have to unplug your 9th injector is about all I know on it but there is a lot of folks doing it.
You must always erase that blank chip before programming it. One thing I sometimes do is save a new bin in a new location where none others exist. That way when I choose and open it in TP this eliminates the chance of opening the same bin. It really sounds like instead of burning a new ARAP you used the same file or you saved your LSR bin over your ARAP. I don't use BURN 1 but I'll do some research on it and get back and we can bounce ideas back and forth.

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
I think we are getting eachother confused here...My car is an 1987 using the 165 ECM with the MAF....I do not have the 9th injector...I am not running the original engine, Im 383 HSR now...Ive done searching and found others to be using the $6e files with no problem and MAF so i'll switch back and see if maybe someone else can chime in here and give some ideas as to why I cant read or write and view my chips correctly.

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
MY GOD!!!!...that was some BS!..but I think I got it!
I removed everything...TP, FB and all the USB drivers. I then re-installed and set it up using the old drivers folder that came with the ALDL cable. I followed the directions for the Burn1, I set everything up the way its said in the text file. Ok then it was on to try and read and program. I tried and tried and kept coming up with the same everytime.
My chip is NOT 64bits its 16bits..I tried everything but it wouldnt work under 64..ok then I figured out that if you use FB while in TPRT you have to first use FB on its own and then open it up thru TP otherwise it wont save the settings for the chip but I think I got it! THankgod! so thats how Ive been spending turkey day.
Ok so heres my chip...what does it look like? I have no idea if its setup good or what? how do I know? wheres a good place to start?

Re: HELP with Newbie tuning for 165- 6e MAF car
from what i see, your setup for 30 lb injectors and he zeroed out your PE power enrichment spark advance table and is working off the main table only. not bad but then again leaves room to play with things. 33 degrees timing at WOT, you may like 34-36, but you can play with that.
PE enrichment vs rpm is showing negative 7.8 percent, so its taking fuel out while MAF table 5 looks to have been modified slightly atleast compared to my values. Not sure how the maf scalar value compare to mine but looks like he might have bumped those values up to add fuel. i'd have to compare to my numbers in my stock bin.
overall doesnt look too bad. i'd have to look more in depth to really see but i got to go
