Ostrich 2.0/etc

I want to start by admitting that like most people who post in here, I am probably posting a question or two about things that are so obvious to some of you, but since I have VERY little knowledge and this is the forum that is where the "Yoda's of Tunning" are, I'm gonna take a try.......
I just bought this stuff:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...ich-2-0-a.html
and I feel that I got a great deal, but I have a few questions (like most do)
First, I'm not sure what the tech name is for this cable/socket, but I'm hoping that a person can remove it from the ECM in the bottom pic since this computer does me no good for TPI. How does a person go about doing that and/or is it even possible? I'm hoping it's not a one-time use deal. I am not completely lost when it comes to soldering and such, but I am not a master at it. I haven't taken the board out of the housing yet because I was hoping someone could offer a little input here to prevent me from destroying anything.
I also would like to hook up my laptop (I bought it for cheap just for this kind of stuff-DATALOGGING) with the ALDL cable I also got. Is windows 98 a complete waste to try and use for tunning/datalogging? If I have the cable, I'm assuming that I will then simply need a program to run on my laptop and a ton of reading/learning to understand.
I'm really sorry to those of you that are probably pulling your hair out because of those of us that ask these questions, but I do plan to try and learn as much as possible from reading/reading/reading/and then read some more. I have already devoted some time to doing so, but for a beginner this stuff is VERY intimidateing.
If anyone can offer any input about removing the cable/socket (thingy ) just so i don't mess anything up, that would be MUCH appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Ostrich 2.0/etc

You can simply unplu the "Emu cable" (The grey ribbin cable) from the socket booster. It will be tight, use a small screwdriver and pry one end up a little, then the other end and work back and forth.

The EMU cable simply presses into the DIP socket that is part of the socket booster.

I wish I had seen that, I'd have been all over it, since I'd like a second Ostrich for my ECM test bench.

Re: Ostrich 2.0/etc

Thanks Six_Shooter
So the ribbon cable comes off from the socket booster. Does that mean that everything supplied by Moates for the Ostrich will come with it leaving only the factory GM components on/in the ECM then?

OK, got the cable off, now just need to know about the socket booster. Is that something that a person can remove and install on another computer, or is it actually a part that is on the computer from the factory?
Thanks.

Re: Ostrich 2.0/etc

From the pictures it looks like it might be soldered to the daughter board in the ECM.

The good news is the Socket Booster is only needed for ECMs that originally used the 24 pin 2732(a) chips, basically the 7747/'148, etc. The '7730/'7749, etc that used a 28 pin chip originally do not need the Socket Booster.

Re: Ostrich 2.0/etc

OK, my plans for this unit are to eventually use in/on a TPI setup. I am running the MAF system now (165) but not sure how hard it is to use on that particular computer. I may be switching to SD someday, and I like the idea of having the emulator for tuning, although I am completely green to this stuff and it is totally confusing.......$6/.bin/etc/etc/etc
Thanks alot for your help Six_Shooter.

Re: Ostrich 2.0/etc

Yeah you won't need the socket booster for the ECM you are planning on using.

You will need a MEMCAL adaptor for it though, I believe even the 165 needs the MEMCAL adaptor.

www.moates.net look for the G1 adaptor under adaptors>GM to see what I'm talking about.

It's great when someone takes a minute to offer info to us newb's.
I still am at stage 1, but I hope to get a little more familiar with this stuff as time goes on

No problem.

I still have a lot to learn too, I just help where I can, when I can, I know how this can seem like some weird VooDoo when you're just starting out.

BTW, I'm a little pissed that you got such a great deal, I wish I had seen it first.
