91 5.7L Problems

Hey,

Just bought a 91 5.7L camaro z28, automatic. The motor has been rebuilt with a higher than stock lift on the cam and the motor has been bored .030 over and besides that everything is stock, except exhaust, k&n's, airfoil. Since i've had it I had some high idle and inconsistant idle.(Idles around 1100 then jumps to 1400-1600 making the car jump at stops) I took it to my mechanic and he went over it bottom to top with his decision being that the problem was in the chip and recommended I got a custom one for that cam specs.

Would the wrong or stock chip make the car idle high and inconsistant?

If I do get a chip should I go with a custom chip for the specs of the cam or just a aftermarket stage 2 chip from hypertech? If I get a custom chip, I do plan on adding bigger injectors, 52mm TB, and swapping intake/runners eventually. Would I have to get another custom chip made for those mods as well?

Thank you for any information,
Andrew

Re: 91 5.7L Problems

If its a stock chip in it it woulndt make it idle that way, something else is wrong.

- Timing to advanced
- Vacuum leak
- Throttle blades not adjusted correct.

Currently I'm tuning a 350 with heads+HSR+ 276HR112 cam and it runs OK with stock chip idles @700rpm, but it needs some tuning to run really good.

/N.

Re: 91 5.7L Problems

So the chip has nothing to do with the idle? Thanks. I did have vaccuum leaks checked and fixed. I'll check the timing tomorrow and if you could give me any information about how the TB blades should be or checked or adjusted?
Thanks!

Check for play in the throttle blade shaft up-down-side-to-side, make sure it seats properly inside the TB, and check the outsideand make sure the stop is seating properly. Had a similar problem when I was still running TPI, the shaft had play causing in consistent idle....
