16147060 help with chip burning

I also posted this over at chevytalk also, I hope that is not frowned upon.

I need some guidance... I have read all I can find on this deal, and I am missing something.

Trying to tune a 1991 1 ton 7.4L, 4L80E trans truck.

Here is what I have:

Moates APU1 burner all in one package

Moates GP1 kit, this allows a 27SF512 chip to be used in place of the factory chip, but still uses the MEMCAL.

I purchased an HDR1, which you use to read the factory MEMCAL, as I wanted to use the factory calibration to start modifying from.

For the interface, I have TunerPro RT

The ECM is 16147060

The blue cover on the memcal says AWAP 4367

The factory chip says DELCO 9108

So here I started - remove the factory MEMCAL, and with the HDR1, I read the factory calibration.

On the net, I read that this ECM uses the $85 mask / or XDF file, so I downloaded that from Moates site, and was able to read the calibration file and looking at the spark and fuel

tables, so far everything looks right, so I feel the $85 seems proper.(?)

Then I take the new 27SF512 chip, and program it with the stock bin. Somewhere I read that the stock bin for a '91-'93 is 32K in size, so I found on moates site a page:

http://www.moates.net/documentation.php?documentat...

about chip address offsets, and changed the CHIP ADDRESS to: 008000 -> 00FFFF

I erased the chip and then programmed it with the bin I read off the factory memcal.

I put the 27SF512 chip in the new GP1, which has a ZIF in it, and the notch in the chip pointed in the proper direction as per this informative page:

http://www.moates.net/documentation.php?documentat...

The truck will start, but the service engine soon light stays on solid, and the truck runs poorly... possibly this is limp home mode?

I checked and rechecked that the pins are all engaging on each component, and when I remove GP1 and plug the stock memcal back in, the truck fires right up, no SES light and runs normal.

Anyways, there is the saga... I am out of ideas, I am either really close, or really far away (HA) and hope someone can steer me straight,

thanks!

install the factory eprom in GP1 to see if the problem is still present. this way you can determine if GP1 is working or not.

Also instead of messing with offset and chip address, use the bin stacker in tunerpro RT. it is under tools (or press F5) .

Re: 16147060 help with chip burning

thanks... those are logical ideas, I appreciate your help.

OK, so forgive a dumb thought, but it looks like the original chip is soldered into the memcal... is that possible, or am I seeing things?

Second, the only way I can think of trying the original chip in the GP1 is by holding the whole memcal in the HDR1... then putting the HDR1 in the GP1. But then I would need another memcal to slide into the GP1 in order for the vehicle to start, would I not?

Great tip about stacking bins.. I have never tried that before, and will tomorrow!

I appreciate the help, if anyone else can shed some light, please hop right in.

Re: 16147060 help with chip burning

original chip is soldered into the memcal. in your case, I would try bin stacking first. make sure to set:
bin size 32k
chip size 64k
block size 64k

Re: 16147060 help with chip burning

OK, tried the stacking thing... this deal and my other post about the ALDL cable problem is really kicking my *** :-(

So... I navigate my way thru the bin stacker, and figure out HOW it is supposed to be done, but run into another glitch... and maybe this is my whole problem.

I set the stacker settings to:
bin size 32K, chip size 64K and block size 64K.

I select my bin, which came from me reading the memcal and saving it in tunerpro.

I try to load it but it says something like bin file does not match settings... OK, so I navigate in windows explorer to where the bin is and it says 4K... the same as my 7747 bins a previous truck I had tuned...

so... I tried the stacker settings at 4K instead of 32K, but then it said something like cannot generate output....

I am not sure where I read the 91-93 bins are 32K... as they seem to be 4K, unless I have messed something up when I saved it??

Another question is... I am using the C2 chip from moates, which I believe is a 27SF512, with that chip, my stacker settings should be "chip size 64K"?

anyways, what do ya'll think I should do from here?

thanks!

Re: 16147060 help with chip burning

OK, tried some more on this deal, have not made any progress...

Does anyone have a copy of AWAP bin? I can't find it anywhere... Is it normal for the bin I read off the memcal to be 4KB?

Just to refresh on this deal, with the stock memcal in place, it runs well. I again put the GP1 back in and this time I removed the chip entirely from the ZIF, and the engine ran just the same as with the 27SF512 chip in place (SES light stays on, and engine starts and runs, but no very well... thinking this is limp home mode).

What am I doing wrong here... Anybody?

When I read the memcal, I have it set for 27c256... maybe that is wrong?

Thanks!

The bins I've read are 32Kb. I have read a few directly from the MEMCALs.

The stock bin is 32k.
Make sure that you have the correct setting while reading. I think it is the 27c256 (read only). Then Read Chip. Then "Save Buffer to File". the file should be 32k.

When you burn it should self populate the
Chip Addressing
"Start Address in Hex" as 000000
"End Address in Hex" as 00FFFF

Buffer Addressing
"Start Address in Hex" as 000000
"End Address in Hex" as 007FFF

When you read the bin, save it with a unique name then "difference tool" compare it to the stock bin you have.

good luck,

Re: 16147060 help with chip burning

OK... success.

I read the memcal in my pocket programmer II and it saved as 32Kb, then I burned the 27SF512 also with the PP II, and it works.... so then I used that bin loaded into the moates APU1 and was emulating just fine... now I have to get a new ALDL cable so I can do some logging...

I must have some setting screwed up in the addresses for the APU1 when reading / burning... I will document all the numbers later tonight and post it here, in case someone else finds themselves in the same boat.

I appreciate the help!

Re: 16147060 help with chip burning

rcb1,

You wouldn't by chance have that original bin file would you? I'm taking everything off a donor vehicle (1991 C3500 5.7 4l80E) and putting the FI and the Trans in my motor home that has a 7.4L. I'll need your factory bin file to start from as I'm sure the maps in the 5.7L chip are way off (plus I'll have the bigger TBI on the 7.4L.

Thanks,
Steve
