Past 3 logging attempts I get failures after about one minute of log. I need to close DL and Learm and exit WU program then shut down puter since com port is locked up. A second attempt at log and Learn is then successfull. This morning I experienced same but log and L failed after about 6 minutes.
Rough road condtions do not affect the program. Possibly the harddrive? Puter is 2 years old.
Is there a test for failing harddrive?
Any suggestions as to what it could be? I will inspect the serial to USB cable and USB socket for stable connection and see if I can prompt the failure.

 

Good possiblility it is the USB to Serial cable. The high data rate of the EBL plus the noise in the auto environment tend to wreak havoc on them.

It may be the HDD. Some laptops today have anti-crash logic in them that shuts down the HDD when the vibration level gets too high. If you have a flash drive try logging to it.

I drove on some very rough roads and no interuption. this morning interrupted at idle in driveway after 20 seconds. Restarted all and was driving on smooth road and failed after one minute.

I am going to inspect the USB connection for wear and try the other USB port that I never used. Logging worked flawwessly for two years and now it pops up?

Is there a test for determining if HDD is failing intermittantly?

 

On XP can scan for bad sectors. Settings, administrative tools, computer management, right click on volume, properties, tools tab, error checking, check now... button.

It fails about 2 in 4 datalogs. failure so far only on cold cold start.
It states devise is working properly. suggests I may want to reinstall driver or use prior driver if new one is causing an issue.

How about changing settings? currently port settings:
bits /sec 9600
data bits 8
parity none
stop bits 1
flow cotrol none

 

I just deleted about 120 logs of on average 15 min each. Is it possible I had a memory issue?

 

The port settings won't matter. They are set up by the WUD.

Running out of hard disc space would do it. Although IIRC, there is a popup warning if that occurs.

As stated I had two failures yesterday in morn. I then deleted 90% of files and used a different USB port. I was thinking maybe one had a connectivity problem either with cable or port wear and tear. Yesterday pm and this morn no failures.

 

Had a thought, try doing a defrag on the disc. It may be that the HDD has to go all over the platter to save the data log, which isn't leaving enough time for the USB driver.

XP and Vista has a defragger as part of the admin tools.

OK. Multiple faiure of datalog. Fails in about 3 min. I did attempt the defrag. Please let me know if this is correct.

It is funny how the forum took the drive designators and turned them into smiley faces. Some things just don't work the way we want them too.

Newer hard drives have onboard diagnostics called "SMART". There are a number of free tools to view the historical statics as a way to predict failure.

otherwise the lap top works flawlessly soo I suspect the hard drive is OK.

I will look again. I would expect it would flag any area that does not meet the test.

I will physically move the usb male to female connection to see if I can get a connection failure. unlikely IMHO.
