Truth or BS???

I ran into a guy who clames he can do deep reprograming on GM ECMs.

When questioned about this he responded thus:

The guy spoke to in Phoenix is not high enough on the food chain to understand some things, that is why you got the answer you got.

GM Tech II w/can communication link, and data support is a dealer service center item only!

If you work outside the dealer network, GM must authorize and license you to be able to be linked and work inside their network. That equipment does not come cheap. All of the computers and agreements to be able to do what we are doing are highly regarded and coveted.

Not everyone can have it.

Our equipment is pre-programmed as regional tech manager status, which means we can see things and change things even some dealers cannot do. GM and Ford both have like 8-10 guys who are regional trouble shooting master tech managers..

When the dealer cannot get it done, they send that guy out with special clearance, upgraded equipment to be able to go in and do things most people cannot. Because that guy knows what he does and has those great responsibilities his blood type has to match blue for Ford, and match performance for GM, otherwise he does not have a job.

Is this true or BS??

Re: Truth or BS???

"Deep" reprogramming...(swpeaking on newer PCMs for the most part 1996-up)
That would require very in depth knowledge of the routines and how they work with the hardware.
Dealers can only alter what already exists using parameter definition maps to different operating values that are programmed into the routines.
I'm sure there are a set of factory guys that have the full souce code and are authorized to make changes. (Men in Black types)
The complexity of the software in the new PCMs is 10x or more difficult to figure out for aftermarket tweaking than the older ones and I haven't heard of anyone "changing" the souce code or needing to for that matter.
The OEMs certainly don't give out the source code to anyone who wishes to play with how the system functions or operates. Too many legal issues with emmisions standards as well as the development cost to the company to enable them to sell the cars.

Re: Truth or BS???

Well he is talking about the OBDII ECMs and being able to change power and also get great MPG (seems power is easy, MPG is impossable...)

It seems a little off...
