Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

Ok, so this isn't my first rodeo but I seem to be stuck trying to read the stock chip in my memcal. This happened last time (on a 165 ecm and ABTD) and I finally got it figured out but I am stuck on this one.

Here's what I got, Moates Burn 2, HDR1, flash n burn, and tunerpro. I am trying to read the stock bin off a 16168625 pcm, bin BCFZ its a 93 s10 w/ 4.3 4l60E.

I have selected different chip types (27c128, 27c256, etc.) to read with but when I open in in tunerpro and try using $E6 mask that is supposed to work, I get nothing. I mean No of cylinders is 00, fuel injector flow rate is 00, everything is all messed up.

What am I doing wrong? I have tried various other masks that were used on that particular ECM and none of them seem to be right.

I have been burning chips pretty regularly for the TPI I have, so I think my hardware is ok, I just can't seem to read the stock bin on this one.

Any help is appreciated.

not sure how much use it would be to you, but i have a BCFY BIN, which AFAIK, is the california emissions version of BCFZ. i could email it to you or post it on the board and maybe you could use it for comparison purposes?

Re: Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

Ok, does the BCFY you have use the $e6 mask? If so it would help verify the mask that I have if I can read it. If you don't mind, post it or e-mail it to lytletw@bv.com.

I'm still researching but it looks like this PCM could possibly use an 0D, 0E, 31, E6, or 8C mask.

Thanks Much!

as far i can tell, it is E6. and you should be reading the chip as a 27C512.

Re: Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

Thanks for taking the time to upload the bin, it will help me diagnose my problem. If this reads ok on my tunerpro with E6 mask then I am getting a bad read for some reason.

You said 27c512, I have found other references on here that the TBI PCMs used a 2732 or 27c256. I tried all of them that would read in flash-n-burn last night and none of them were comprehensible in TP. Since I can't open FnB or TP here at work I will give it another try tonight. I have found a ton more masks that might have been used with the 8625 PCM, so I will give those a try as well.

Wait, the one you posted is 64kb, mine have only been 16kb, is this where I'm going wrong?

Re: Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

64KB correlates to a 512 KiB(64KB) PROM, which is why i suggested the 512... 16KB correlates to a 128 PROM.

when you have the opportunity, open up FnB, select any chip in the list, then select the 27C512, then just hit read chip, then save buffer to file. most of the time i see people add in extra steps with offsets and it rocks their world in a way they don't want.

Ok gotcha on the 512, I'll give it a try like you said.

IIRC, last time when I had trouble it was a sequence issue. I fired up FnB with the chip in the burn2 or something like that.

i haven't used the standalone FnB program in a LONG time.... just takes so much less time to do it in the tunerpro instance.

Until I just read your post, I didn't realize it could be done with tunerpro RT. I guess it is time for me to upgrade to RT, especially since I just ordered the datalogging stuff.

Re: Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

Ok, so I got it to work finally. I opened the BCFY you posted and read it just fine with the E6, so I tried to read mine again just like you suggested, still didn't work. So I uninstalled the FnB and drivers and re-installed them, tried again, still would not work. So I upgraded to Tunerpro RT and used the FnB funtion in Tunerpro RTto read it and it worked first try. I noticed that the default addressing in the TunerproRt version is different than the stand alone FnB so I'm guessing that I what gave me problems. I have no idea why they were incorrect.

Thanks for basically solving this problem for me.

You know it is kindof ironic that most of the guys on this site will preach that it is better to buy the stuff to tune yourself as opposed to buying a mail order tune which I would agree. But the fact is, for the average hotrodder, these programs and systems are complex and not easy to learn. And for the most part, there is not alot of support for a new user. So, Saar, thank you for taking the time to help me out, I will try to give back to the forum when I have enough knowledge.

Re: Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

cool, i never knew that the default addressing was different in TPRT compared to the actual FnB program... may be something that craig needs to know about so it can be fixed in the next version.

Re: Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

Ok so I went home and checked because I wanted to be sure. This is what I found out.

Flash N Burn
Chip Addressing
000000
00FFFF
Buffer Addressing
000000
000000

TunerPro RT
Chip Addressing
000000
00FFFF
Buffer Addressing
000000
007FFF

I'm not sure if the difference I something I changed in the past or if this is the way it came.

Re: Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

that's odd... so in TP the buffer(and therefore offset) is automatically setup based on BIN size, but in FnB it isn't?

and chip addressing is identical either way... hmm.

Re: Trouble reading stock memcal- 1993 BCFZ

Right, the buffer is different. But, I'm not sure if I managed to change it to come up that way or if it has always been that way. This is the first time I have actually used the 27c512 setting, although I'm sure I have tried in the past.
