Hey guys, i got a crazy idea, could it be possible to use gm ecm to run a chevy 250 straight 6?

I was thinking of using a HEI, and maybe a tbi setup.

Not so crazy.

It's a Nissan I6, but the priciple is the same.

Don't worry it's actually mounted now.

I have also changed from the dizzy to DIS since the above pictures were taken.

In my case, I was able to install a later Nissan dizzy that had a magnetic reluctor, very similar to what is found in an EFI controlled GM dizzy. I simply connected the Nissan dizzy to a GM ICM, that I pirated from a 2.8L S-10 dizzy. This gave the ECM RPM reference, and gave the ECM the ability to control the timing.

IIRC there are HEI style dizzys available for the Chevy I6 that would make the conversion somewhat easy, in that you can get the magnetic reluctor that way and then use a 7 pin HEI module to inteface with the ECM.

The next hardest part is setting up the Fuel, but if you can get your hands on either a 2.5L or 2.0L/2.2L TBI throttle bodies, these would be fairly easy to adapt to your existing manifold being single barrel TBI units. If you wanted to go a little more custom, you could get a 4 BBL manifold and use a TBI unit off 4.3 or SBC, with an adaptor plate.
Even more custom yet would going MPFI.

I short, there's no reason you can't, just time and some money to get it all together, amybe a couple custom adaptors too.

A fellow did a TBI conversion few years ago and was posting their progress on the GMECM mailing list...

GM used TBI one barrels in early years but not sure if their ECU are hacked. My prior CF used two one barells that I recall were used on other GM apps.

Re: Using a GM ECM in a straight 6

GM Brazil and Mexico BOTH built MPFI 250 I6 engines they dubbed the 4100 MPFI. The manifold looks very TPI like and I can tell you its NOT a crossflow head, so it would probably bolt right up if you could obtain one. That being said I know the California version of the 4.1 250 I6 in atleast the G-Van had a computer controlled carb and distributor around 1984. This EST distributer is compatible with either a TBI or MPFI ECM. I think a MPFI setup running a V6 7730 would run VERY WELL.

Really? I live in Mexico, and haven't seen one, now that i think about it i know we had fuel injected inline sixes in the early 90's, it's been ages since i've seen an inline down here that's running, but they can be bought for cheap around 150 bucks or less.

So bassically, the 7730 V6, would run the inline with no big troubles?

Re: Using a GM ECM in a straight 6

I think your getting confused with southamerican models, for example the GrandBlazer doesn't exist here in Mexico, we have the same models as in the US, only drivetrains change a little, but i'm still pretty sure that in the very early 90's we had I6's in some trucks.

Now that i think about it, i'm pretty sure that the last I6's where all 292's
