Basic Tuning Questions

More simple , stupid questions for you guys : I have been tuning my '87 on a 32B xdf ... I have an LM2 wide band and Autoprom with Tuner Pro ... I have been somewhat successful in modifying Open Loop and WOT stuff but the Closed loop tuning remains a mystery to me .... What and where do I tune ? ... I am about to start tuning from the 6E mask and it allows access to a LOT more parameters than the 32B ... understand that I'm an old guy that has forced himself to use and embrace computers , I have access to youthful helpers in regard to the computer but they are car illiterates and have no idea what I'm talking about ... I've spent hours reading posts and references but it seems that they jump from a newbie shopping list for tools to Einstein-info about zip files and such ... can anyone give a BASIC tutorial on actual tuning and less about the theory ? Like change this by ..... or to ..... and if you modify this it will affect ..... ? I and I'm sure , countless others would surely appreciate it . This info exists , and these questions have all been answered ... I'm just looking for a link ... a short cut because I fear that by the time I sort through all the info thats out there I will have forgotten what I was trying to accomplish in the first place ........... Thanks for your patience

Did you read the stickies above? That plus individuual threads here. A search for specific info will yield rewards. Specific questions are generally answered with greater exuberence than broader questions.

Re: Basic Tuning Questions

Ronny , I have read the stickies and many of the posts ... I have read 'til my eyes bled ... specific questions require specific knowledge , which I think I'm lacking . Here's my question(s) ... How do I tune closed loop to " get the BLM's in order first " ? Do I alter MAF tables or BPW ? And what do I change on either to accomplish what ? What is the MAF scalar and what does it do ? And why does my Wide Band tell me that open loop affects closed loop when various tuners tell me otherwise in a variety of assorted stickies ?

Re: Basic Tuning Questions

Sorry my knowledge is speed density specific. I have never tuned a MAF vehicle.

How do I tune closed loop to " get the BLM's in order first
That was my first adjust after setting BPC.

BPC I believe is set it correctly for CID-FP-INJ SIZE and forget it. BPC is not a tuning tool from what I read and have done. Although I see some deviate.

Witnessing BLM and correcting for it in "tables" allows the ECU to be more efficient. If "tables" are off the BLM still provides desired A/F at stoich. It is still best that the tables be as close as possible. My tune was based upon summer air temps. In Nov I saw high BLM as expected. I left it alone.

Open loop affects CL? Again I am SD but would like an explanation from someone as to how. OL is used when coolant temps are under 160-165F. I am sure there are modifiers to OL A/F maybe current BLM is looked at and OL A/F is then modified. OL may also be basis for fuel crank and choke again with a BLM modifier. Not sure. I am aware AE does affect BLM and to a greater degree INT. Rich AE tends to bleed over and move INT. Much of this I recall may be in stickies. My WB pretty much confiirms my seat of pants as far as tune in AE and PE and cold start. I can feel when tune is too fat. Recently I am using to tune N20 jetting. That is a big help.

Robert Raucher has a writeup on all this somewhere on this board. May be in stickies.

If 32B, you can do both, pulsewidth tables and MAF tables to adjust BLMs in closed loop. Also changes open loop operation as well.

6E doesnt have the pulsewidth table like 32-32B so just change MAF tables.

MAF scalars just change the entire MAF table. If you notice your datalogs have blms far from 128 across an entire MAF table range, then you can adjust the scalar to quickly bring those back up (or down) to where they need to be.
I like to just dive into the MAF tables and rarely adjust scalars.

Not sure what you mean by open loop affects closed loop. Your main fueling parameters come from MAF tables. The open loop tables and PE mode tables adjust fuel for different situations. MAF tables will change both open loop and closed loop fueling.

If you change the open loop fuel tables (Two of them..one vs LV8 and one vs coolant temp) you should see open loop air fuel differences but when you go to closed loop, the ECM will now use o2 sensor data to try to command stoich air fuel. This is where BLM of 128 comes from. So changes to open loop tables shouldnt really change closed loop operation unless they are way off and the ECM cant compensate that much.
Thats why I'd like to tune open loop first (disable closed) and when that is close to the air fuel ratios the motor likes, enable closed loop and it shouldnt have to compensate much.

Re: Basic Tuning Questions

Ronny , What is BPC ? ..... If I adjust open loop to a lambda 0.95 my closed loop lambda under the same operating conditions will show 1.05 and vice-versa if I tune open to 1.05 my closed will show 0.95 as if the ECM is compensating to force the AFR in the stoich direction which is exactly what I am ASSUMING and , when I get it in the 0.98-1.02 range , I see the same on both OL and CL .

Re: Basic Tuning Questions

Maybe your mask/definition file does not have a base pulse constant? ECU uses the BPC to determine fueling. It is a constant derived from CID-FP-injector size. For example mine is 350 cid/ 20 lbs fuel pressure and 80 lbs injector size. Knowing that the ECU knows how much to squirt to arrive at commanded A/F.

Re: Basic Tuning Questions

ORR89ROCZ ... How are you tuning open loop ? specifically ? I have been adjusting 32B AFR with the two open loop categories ( vs temp and vs Lv8 ) and some minor moves in the AE categories and , of course , the global abilities of fuel injector constants and fuel pressure .
When you are adjusting MAF tables ... which direction ( up / down ) will richen a particular block ? I could just dive in and make some big moves to see what'll happen but my neighbors are already pissed at my comings and goings and more so at my start it ... change it ... start it ... change it ... on and on ... I love my flowmasters ... they don't ...
The more mods that progress the more detailed the tuning becomes ... since installing a Comp 280 XFI , the engine has developed a large flat spot when trying to lightly accelerate from a stop up to speed ... WB usually shows 1.24 Lambda but sometimes as much as 1.55 and nothing seems to change it in OL or CL ... seems to occur at approx 2200-2800 rpm ... possibly an unexpected ram effect from the FIRST Intake ??

Re: Basic Tuning Questions

Whats your engine combo?

I use 6E alot and havent touched any 32 32B setups but they have a base pulsewidth table from what I've seen that should be adjusted before anything else. That should effect both open and closed loops.

When in MAF tables...if you increase the values, you add more fuel. I will note what the air fuel is at a certain grams/sec flow from the datalogs. Say I am at 2000 rpm cruise and 80 grams/sec flow... I notice I'm lean at 16 to 1 air fuel. I will go into my MAF tables and find about where 80 grams/sec is. I will increase the two values it lies between by few percent and try datalog it again. That should richen it up.

I have nothing in 32B regarding engine displacement or fuel pressure ... there is a setting for fuel injector constant ... same goes for 6E ...

Re: Basic Tuning Questions

ORR89ROCZ ... 32B does have Base Pulse Width vs Lv8 tables ... I'm not seeing anything like that on 6E

My combo : 400 + .040 = 409ci AFR 195 Eliminator heads , First Fuel Injection Intake , Comp Cams 280 XFI LT1 cam , 32#/hr Bosch III's , Forged dish pistons , 10:1 compression , Hooker 1 3/4" LT's , 2500 stall lock-up converter , built 700R4 , Dana 44 3.42 gears , Tuning with Moates Autoprom , TunerProRT , ZIF chip adapter , LM2 Wide Band O2S w/inputs for RPM and TPS , Great for WOT tuning at the strip ...

Thanks for your take on the MAF tuning ...

Re: Basic Tuning Questions

yeah, i worded the above wrong. I mean 32-32B stuff has that table of pulsewidth vs LV8. I'd use that to tune BLM if using 32 32B. Should work just as good as MAF.

6E does NOT have that table so use MAF tables.

For WOT, use PE mode enrichment vs RPM
