Total Timing

just looking to learn about tuning a bit more. Just have a few questions. Is total timing the sum of the bins base timing in the constants section of tuner pro plus the numbers in the 208 row of Spark Advance Table. I'll list a few examples and you guys tell me if I'm understanding this correctly.

first example

Tables/functions
Spark Advance Table
208 Row
4800 26.02+ 8.09 base timing= 34.11 total timing??
4400 26.37+ 8.09 base timing= 34.46 total timing?

example#2

Tables/functions
Spark Advance Table
208 row
4800 22.85+8.09 base timing=30.94 total timing
4400 23.20+8.09 base timing=31.29 total timing

If my understanding is correct please let me know..thank you

are you sure, another member on the site emailed me and said i was incorrect. He said it was spark advance table 208+PE mode spark advance vs. RPM valve..He said the base timing doesnt coming into the formula and isn't added to the main spark advance table????

Re: Total Timing

do a search on total timing
ex. base timing 6 deg. + spark advance 24 deg.= 30 deg. total timing
pe adds timing to that

well that makes sense from what he was saying...he said he just put 0 in the PE mode spark advance and does the timing in the main spark advance table so he doesnt have to add the main spark table to the PE spark table to get total timing

The initial/base SA is subtracted out in the ECM, but added back in by the distributor. So it has no affect on the main SA table values. Say the initial SA is set to 6* BTDC. Which is also where the distributor base timing is set.

Table look up gives 30* BTDC (ignore all other SA modifiers).

The ECM sub's out the 6* initial and programs the distributor for 24* of advance (30 - 6).

Since the distributor is set for 6* BTDC, that is the reference point to add the 24* to. So the at-crankshaft timing ends up at 30* BTDC. Same as the table value.

Head up to the Tuning Guide Book sticky, chapter 5, '8746/'8063/'7747 ECM section. SA Logic explains a lot about how the spark advance logic works.
