Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have TunerProRT, ALDLcabe.com cable, and Windows 7.

Workin on 89 TPI 305 converted to speed density w 730 ecm. (No vats, emissions, etc chip burnt by Tuned Performance here on the board)

All this is in a 98 GMC Sonoma

I can't get any data flow between the ecm and tunerpro. Help!

Grab the .ADX (not .ads) from here and save a step. .ads files need to be converted to .adx to work on TunerPro 5

Ok, I've did the right click, save as. Now what do I do with it... ? LOL

I registered and tried to open and save those at Gearhead, but I can't open either one, (ADX or ads).

Re: Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

Start TunerPro RT. Click Acquisition - Load Acquisition File. Select the .ADX file you just downloaded in the directory you saved it in (Most likely My Documents - Downloads)

If you have done it right on the top bar of TunerPro RT the last third of the bar after the "|" will show your proper Acquisition File. Nothing in the first two sections of the bar matter for just scanning purposes. They are for the other portion of TunerPro RT, that being the chip burning functions.

Ok, The last third reads ADX File -1227730_8D.adx

But nothing changed on the screen. Does it need to be plugged into the aldl port on the truck to make it work?

Copied from over there;

1. CHIP: .bin extension. TunerPro, File, Open Bin. Choose your bin you downloaded and saved. Now your bin is loaded in TunerPro.

I don't have a bin that I know of. Where/what/how do I find those?

Re: Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

I make and sell ALDL to USB cables as Red Devil River. http://reddevilriver.com

Here is a link to my install disk. It might help you. It should work the same with the ALDLcable.com cable just the same as mine.

It walks you through setting up TunerPro RT and configuring the COM port and selecting the .ADX file.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7t7o915axv...20USB-ALDL.zip

It is the entire install disk in .zip format.

The ONLY file needed for scanning is the .ADX file. None of the other files are needed or will make any difference.

The first two boxes do not apply to what you are doing. The third box will tell you the data rate after you are connected. The forth box is your connect status.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

The com port was something else I had difficulties with. The cable instructions said something about it might not work with anything above com 3 or 4? All I have been able to find on my computer is Com8.

TunerPro RT will work fine with the COM ports up into the 20s. Other programs might have problems with higher COM ports but not TunerPro RT.

COM 8 is just fine. My current configuration of TunerPro RT is using COM 11.

You could use HyperTerminal to troubleshoot your cable, but I don't think you are there yet. You are still working on getting TunerPro RT set properly. Once you do all that if you still had problems, perhaps you would want to look at the cable with HyperTerminal, but perhaps later.

Also when you go to connect TunerPro, of course the cable has to be plugged into the vehicle and yes the vehicle has to have the key on, but the engine does not need to be running.

Lots of ports being used for someone who is "Computer Illiterate"

Com 8 should be fine.

Ah, Ok I'll try it with it plugged into the truck. I've tried it before that way and got nothing, but I can try again.

When I plug the cable into the aldl port the cooling fans and fuel pump kick on. That's why I haven't tried it too many times that way. (I'm 500 mies from home so a dead battery is a huge inconvience... LOL)
I pull the fuel pump relay and unplug the fans though. That won't confuse things will it?

The resistor in the cable is what causes the fans to come on. IDK how they make their cables but if you can make sure it is set to 10K. After you get it to connect you can try it with the resistor disabled, however there is a chance that it will block the signal. The signal will always work with the resistor set at 10K.

You can always start the truck too.

Unplugging the fuel pump relay and fans (or fan relays) won't affect connecting to the ECM.

Re: Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

I think the resistor in internal in the usb plug itself, but it has a movable "jumper" gizmo that lets you use the resistor or bypass it. I have to have it in the A shorted to B, (resistor bypassed), position to get the ecm into diagnostic mode, (SES light flashes codes). It does need to be in diagnostic mode, correct?

The resistor should not be bypassed (shorted A - B). The ECM needs to "see" the 10K resistor that is between A - B. The SES light won't be flashing codes with the cable in place.

The 730 doesn't need the 10k to start data flow.

You don't need a .bin file to datalog. The .bin is the binary read of the eprom if you were going to edit it to reprogram.

That is right. I don't know if the 0 ohm A-B short will kill the data stream however.

Ok I got some sort of data goin!
I recorded a little of it and saved it. I just get stuff at the bottom of the screen. (Item lists). The big gray area at the top/middle of the screen just stays blank, (gray).

Re: Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

Close any other boxes in the gray area. Grab the top line of the top of the bar of the box with your information in it and "pull" it up to occupy 7/8ths of the screen. If you pull it up too far and it goes total full screen, the escape key gets you out of it.

Also try the 'dash' view. Depending on your .ADX file it gives you the data in a dash format. Go to Acquisition - Show Dash

Re: Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

Yes in C.

On the other screen with all the numbers it might have one in C and one in F.

Click on the X in the upper right hand corner of the box labeled "Parameter Tree" That box is for chip burning and is meaningless to have open.

Re: Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

The dash definition is stored in the .ADX file. You are running the $8D correct? This $8D .ADX file has a much more complete dash. Download it, save it and try it. If it works cool.

Go into the Aquisition menu, Edit definition...
Create item under "Values" for "MAT Deg F" with 1:1 conversion sent to a lookup table.
Create the Lookup table (see pic and chart)

Then edit the XDF for the item and change the row "lables" to match the Deg F values. Text box has the conversion values if you have a S_AUJP file.
Make sure to set the DA associated units box to the new item in deg F.
Then Tracing will work with the correct values.
This is the same for the cts, You can customize your dash display as well I like to use analog gauges

"Grab" the top line of the top of the bar of the dash window and pull it upwards till it fills most of the screen.

As an alternative you can double click the bar of the dash window and have the dash go full screen. Hit escape to return from the full screen mode.

I assume you don't have a need, but if you do have the need in the future of an 12, or 16 pin ALDL to USB cable visit my site http://reddevilriver.com or I am also on Ebay. Included with the cable is the CD that I linked to earlier.

Also on my site are the two wire White and Pink ICM to coil cables. Fiero owners are my primary customers however they were used on many F bodies also.

Oh yeah, I like that one much better!

I just customized the one I was using and then downloaded the one in the link.

That second screen shot is of recorded data while it was moving down the road.

(Tuned Perfomance, notice the speedo!)

When I first got data flow and started recording while moving, the tuner pro speedo was registering almost exactly double mph compared to my GPS. I switched to port 4 on the sgi-5 and got 0mph reading. So I switched back to port 3 and did the quick calibrate to .5 and now the tuner pro speedo is within 1-2mph of my GPS.
So I'm assuming this means the ecm should be getting the correct vss reading.
Now I can start working on getting the correct signal to the truck speedo to make it work! Hopefully... LOL

Thanks to both of you guys for helping me out with this part.

Does the 98 speedo run off of the 4000 PPM output of the ECM or does it run off of the BCM. If it runs off of the BCM you will have problems.

Near as I can tell it comes straight out of the PCM to the instrument cluster.

Yep. It hasn't been stalling out since I switched to output 3 on the sgi-5, but at least now I know it's getting the correct speed signal.

It does take quite a while for it to idle down when I come to a stop though. The rpm slowly drops as I slow down, but it very seldom comes to a complete idle until after I completely stop.

No SES light and the new dashboard shows it's goin into closed loop. So I'm gaining! LOL I'll get to check the mileage this weekend when I go home.

That's what I've been hoping. I haven't really played with the speedo hookup yet. Been waiting on getting the tunerpro working so I could see what the ecm was seeing, then on to the speedo and cruise next. LOL

Are you familiar with the sgi-5?

Re: Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

Using Notepad open up the .ADX with the dash you want in it. Find the block and copy it that starts with

<ADXDASHBOARD id="MainDash" idhash="0x0447D842" title=" -= Main Dash =-">

and ends with

</ADXDASHBOARD>

Of course your dash will be named differently

Then with Notepad open the .ADX you want to paste the dash into. Find it's first <ADXDASHBOARD> entry and paste your added dash in front of it. Make sure you don't loose a line feed and have two lines that should be one after the second on the same line (ie </ADXDASHBOARD><ADXDASHBOARD.... ....>)

The <ADXDASHBOARD... ...> line denotes the start of the dash definition and the </ADXDASHBOARD> denotes the end.

Now open up TunerPro RT and reattach the correct function to the gauges. Sorry but because different definitions have the data being located in different places (the whole need for the definitions), the dash gauges are now pointed at the wrong places. So just go into the acquisition definition editor and reattach the gauges to their function.

Well at least it saves you 3/4 of the work of defining the dash.

Now that is what i am talking about!! woohoo, we got it now!! piece of cake. Seems like i recall doing that long time ago. Most gages lined up when i opened up the new definition. Thanks much!!
So now 2 new questions have just come up.
Is there a way to edit the title of the gage down? Like Manifold Air Pressure, in an analog gage takes up much of the dial, and is overshadowing things. Not a big deal.....

Next, do you have the lookup table for MAT in deg F? i got the other 2 temps converted over to degF from C, but the MAT uses a lookup table. Shouldnt be too complicated.
Thanks so much!

Re: Computer illiterate. Anybody wanna walk me through TunerPro?

I'll answer one right away and I'll look up the other later.

Open the .ADX file with notepad. Look for the part that looks like this, but for the gauge in question

<ADXVALUE id="12" idhash="0xDE6A84B0" title="Manifold Air Temperature">
<units>Deg F</units>
<packetoffset>0x1D</packetoffset>
<range low="0.000000" high="250.000000" />
<alarms low="-40.000000" high="200.000000" />
<digcount>2</digcount>
<outputtype>3</outputtype>
<MATH equation="X" lookupidhash="0xAF69C139">
<VAR varID="X" type="native" />
</MATH>
</ADXVALUE>

Change the name in the title. It will change the name in all parts of TunerPro RT that reports that item.
