Hardware recommendations plzz

Looking at getting set up for tuning my 93 k1500. I am looking at getting the autoprom or ebl flash. Can anyone please give their input on what their opinions are on these or whatever they like using and why? Thanks in advance

What are you wanting to accomplish?
What features are important?

Re: Hardware recommendations plzz

I'm getting ready to do a vortec head swap along with cam. I know some tuning will be required. I like the idea of emulation in real time, to make small changes and make sure I'm going the right direction before burning a chip. I know I can do this with the autoprom and tunerpro, but I don't know anything about ebl and if it's worth looking into. Also any other hardware configurations out there

Re: Hardware recommendations plzz

I have the EBL P4 on my 88 IROC the ability to have 8 different tunes loaded in the ECM and to switch with a mouse click while driving is a big plus when tuning. For example to have 8 spark curves and to data log the results in real time was a big help. With auto prom you at some point will have to pull down the ECM from the dash to replace the chip. The EBL is almost like obd2 you have a cable plugged in and flash the tune no need to touch the ECM

That does sound pretty nice! Does it have its own program for tuning and emulating? Or does it let you use tunerpro or cats? Im not completely comfortable soldering the board in myself so I know my truck will be down waiting for my ecm to come back.

Re: Hardware recommendations plzz

My opinions:

Swapping a prom is so easy. I don't see the big deal. I think flashing a tune is far more annoying.

Having 8 tunes to swap from is overkill. Nobody needs that.

It has its own setup to log/tune.
I think there are several reasons to get one, but not for the reasons in this thread so far.

So would you recommend the autoprom? It seems it would do just about everything i would ever need along with software

i use tunerpro to edit the bin... As to flash vs changing prom everyone can have their opinion but too change the prom you have to either pull the ECM out or have a remote socket. By the time you price the hardware you have just spent about the cost of an EBL system to me it's no contest. As to 8 tunes being loaded is an overkill... All I can say is I have gone thru over 75 in fine tuning mine and not done yet. It lets you try fine adjustments without stopping to reflash bins just load some ideas and go for a spin and see how the car reacts to them

Hmm.
Ostrich $160
Cable $20-60
Burner $55
Adapter and proms $55
$320 and you could skip/sell the burner if you want.
That's more than a hair under the feature rich EBL.

And going through many tunes is one thing. Needing 8 at a time on the car is ludicrous.

Re: Hardware recommendations plzz

My tuning setup cost: $110. And the ecm can hangout while tuning and be easily put back when not.
MOST people don't tune daily. And do it in bursts where all of the complaints are moot.

Re: Hardware recommendations plzz

So for the ebl flash( I think that's the model I need for 16168625) you can either tune with the wud or with tunerpro? Any other software that can be used? I've also wondered about emulating or real time tuning? Is that an option with ebl? I saw some ppl on here are using the ostrich or autoprom in conjunction with it? Thanks to you guys helping me under this better!

Re: Hardware recommendations plzz

If you have a e transmission you can incorporate your 16168625 ecm.

No chip swapping, has Flash memory on board
High speed data logging
USB interface to laptop/PC
Code for the ECM is enhanced with larger tables and added functionality
What's Up Display provides a Windows based graphical interface along with analysis screens
Documented calibration tables for the new ECM code along with ECU and XDF definition files (used to edit the calibration tables)
Hardware is industrial temperature specified and conformal coated for reliability and long life.

Re: Hardware recommendations plzz

For a beginner I think the ebl is made to be easy to learn. The same principles apply to non ebl ecms but the learning feature can tune in your fueling fast compared to doing the math method I use to correct mail order tunes.
