Best setup for a beginner.

I'm wanting to get into the EPROM burning stuff for my car. Its an 87 transam GTA witha 5.7 liter tpi. what I was wondering is what is a good setup for a beginner to mess around wiht. I'm planning on doing a couple of mods here in the near future - AFPR,headers, cam and cold air intake. Also does anybody have any performance gains on programming your own chip? thanks for the time.

When I started a few months ago I received a lot of good information from https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml
