Always keep a good/known to work MEMCAL. Things do go wrong sometimes.
Also, do a search on 27c256 and you will find more information than you can think of questions to ask.

Yes, you can use a 27C256 on a 165, but you must "offset" the BIN to load on the top half since a 256 is a 32K chip and a 128 is a 16K chip.
But, why use a 27C256 when you can use an AT29C256 Flash Prom. The only downside to using Flash Proms is that your UV Eraser collects dust.
