My car is a mostly stock '87 L98 with factory computer with stock tune. I have plans for cam, intake, and maybe heads in the near future. I want to be able to watch everything and eventually tune my own files.
I have done some research and know I need an aldl cable like this
and TunerPro RT software.
My question is do I need ADX and XDF files to be able to view live data and datalog?
If I do where can I find them at? I could not find the download part on code59.org
Any help would be great as I am still green at this.
Thanks
The XDF file is for modifying the BIN. The ADX or ADS file is for data logging and observing the ALDL data.
Can get the files on TunerPro.net, Download Definitions.
Note that data logging the '7165 ECM isn't always reliable. Standard mode is at 160 baud with limited data. A 10K resistor across ALDL terminals A&B will put it into 8192 baud mode. It also sends more data.
The 10K should then be removed as it changes how the engine runs.
While datalogging the '165 can sometimes have trouble it's not impossible.
Use the 10k resistor to start the datalogging, then Swatch it off, one connected.
Also make sure you have a good battery in your laptop, because it seems that trying to use an inverter to power the laptop will cause too much noise and make datalogging difficult.
I agree with six_shooter. Data logging a 165 is not impossible, but it is tedious and sometimes difficult. On my laptop, I had to edit the power settings to make sure it does go to sleep on battery power. If the screen goes dark or the hard drive goes to sleep, the connection will be lost. I also had to add a pause per instructions I found on the tunerpro forum. Helped greatly. Also, datalogging a 165 depends on the ecm. I have had several ecm's and for some reason, the ability to datalog depends on the ecm. My current ecm does pretty good (knock on wood). I have other ecms that could only datalog for a few seconds before dropping the link.
I data log all the time on my 165 ECM, it works fine. It drops off every now and then, but no big deal. I just got a new laptop for it, saved all my files and programs to a thumb drive and transferred them over. I plugged in my Moates burner and ALDL and it automatically downloads the proper drivers with wifi. Just had to check the COM ports to make sure it recognized the cable.
what all these great links to old posts don't tell you is that datalogging a '165 ECM is nearly impossible.
I've already wasted hundreds of dollars on equipment.
Have you tried WinALDL? I used to datalog all the time both my TPI cars with 165 ECMs using an old laptop running Windows XP. I haven't tried that program with Windows 7 64 bit but when my car is running again I'll give it a go.
