I dropped the ECM to play around with the highway fuel mode a little and of course I couldn't stop there... lol...
Not sure what made me do it, but I decided to try the LT1 AE delta-TPS table for the 6speed (I've been running the one for the 4speed auto all this time since I have the A4 auto in my car). They're the same except for after 25% delta-TPS, where the M6 goes significantly leaner. See tables below... M6 is the first one, A4 is the second one.
Not sure how to describe it, but the throttle feels "cleaner" and "smoother" when there's a quicker throttle transition while driving at speed. It felt good before, don't get me wrong...
But I do notice on the WB that the AFR doesn't dip nearly as much during larger throttle transitions. With the A4 table, the WB gauge would dip to ~11 to 11.5 for about a couple of milliseconds before coming up to the programmed AFR. With the M6 table, it only dips to low 12's.
The conventional wisdom with these short runner manifolds like the Miniram prefer more and more AE, and to some extent that's the case. For example, going leaner on the lower delta-TPS values (like 0% to 25%) doesn't work well for off-idle transitions... starts getting stumbling and hesitation. So the M6 table is probably the minimum that the Miniram likes. But there are definitely limits to how rich the AE should be.
Large throttle transitions from off idle don't appear to be affected by this change. Hard launches are just as good as before (at least no worse anyway). This seems to only improve throttle transitions while driving at speed.
Yeah I think seeing a dip to low mid 11’s air fuel during a throttle change is way to much AE. Sounds like you had more than needed. But i am not sure why the 6 spd stuff is that much different than the auto, unless its less load expected from direct driving of the clutch with better gear ratios and no converter slip eating up power. Not sure
Looks like GM arrived at a similar result... at least relative to the M6 (BDLD). Yeah I'm not sure why the A4 (BDZL) was so rich. But here's the AUJP table..
They greatly richened up the AE below 34% delta-TPS. But after that, the values are the same between AUJP and BDLD.
Kinda cool when you can empirically back into (or stumble into in this case!) the rationale as to why certain things were done the way they were...
