Where to start on an "odd" combination?
Where to start on an "odd" combination?
Hi guys, I posted this before to the gmecm group at diy-efi.org, but I guess it's too stupid of a question to make it past the moderator. Maybe you guys can tell me if I'm totally lost.
I'm in the process of installing speed density TPI on my Suburban. Since I'll be starting with an "odd" combination (unless somebody has a bin for a 3/4T 4X4 TPI Suburban), I just want to make sure I have a good handle on how to approach tuning. My thinking is that once I get everything mechanically done, I should start with the bin from the AUJP mempack I bought from the dealer. I have one other chip right now that came with the ECM and I have erased with my UV eraser, and 10 new ones on the way. I was intending to clear the vats flag using cats tuner software and burning the resulting code onto the "spare" chip. I believe from this point, it should be able to run the vehicle, but it obviously won't be anything close to what it will need to be. I'd like to think that I will be able to connect my laptop to the ALDL using diacom or datamaster, see what is happening to the BLM values and use that as a starting point to make my changes. Is that correct, or am I totally out here? To me, it seems like a good method to start with. I already have the ALDL cable, the cats software, and am trying to decide between diacom and datamaster right now. I have the diy-wb board and am still awaiting the parts kit, and I'll build a display for that as soon as I can. I just want to make sure I'm not standing at the base of the wrong tree, or even in the wrong forest.
Also, since there's no bin available for this, but there is for the '7747 - albeit TBI, would it make sense that reviewing the '747 code might be helpful to me in terms of getting closer to a drivable setup in less time? Can enough of a comparison be drawn between the 2 systems that I could get any better sense of what direction to go in with my tuning based on the same vehicle with TBI?
If this is all too simple to consider a response other than RTFA, could someone at least offer me where to start in the archives for how to start from square one with an unusual combination like this?
Thanks in advance,
Jake Kooser

Sounds like you're got your ducks lined up. AUJP is the one I'd use. You don't mention any specs so I ***-u-me that its the stock 350TBI engine and 700R4. Shouldn't present any tuning nightmares. Should start right up baring any mechanical goofs.
Log some data, review it, make changes.
Forget looking at the 747 stuff. TBI is a different animal and won't help you by looking at the BINs. Probably just be confusing.

Cool. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't totally off base before I get too far along this route. The engine is a totally stock TBI unit, with the exception of an edelbrock Performer manifold and quadrajunk (hey, it's a temp!) and a set of full length headers. No 700R4, though - TH400 for 3/4 ton models.
Got the runners and manifold all cleaned up last night - any tips for painting intake manifolds? I'd like to use the new Z06 blue color for it...
Also going to swap in electric fans and stewart water pump this weekend. Then waiting for Force EFI to modify fuel rails for AN fittings and Chevythunder.com to finish wiring harness.

Noone prevented your email from being posted.
If you tried posting and never saw it, then you made an error.
There are several links from the WWW.Tunercat.Com site that should help you.

I really wanted to do a reality check before I go any nuttier on this project than I already have. Seems like I have the right idea, now I just have to implement it. Like the thirdgen programming article says: Steps 1-9 and 11-16 are the easy steps. Step 10, of course, is making it usable.
Makes sense to me to try and understand the whole process - almost like ACTUALLY reading the instructions first for once.Jake

No offense intended, Bruce, but it's been a week since I originally sent that email to the gmecm group... and I have posted questions there before, so I know I have the right address. Please accept my apology if that came off wrong. I'm not really used to a moderated list environment, either, so it's a bit frustrating to not have posts go right through. Wouldn't be the first time my foot's been in my mouth.

In the last few months (since the FBI began listening) to the Net things have even been worse (IMHO).
The DIY-EFI list is in full moderated mode, and the GM-ECM is still in open mode. I happen to be the moderator of the GM-ECM list so I do know what the statise is off the list.
Hopefully you followed along on the tunercat links, and found the ecm guy's stuff
