Alt not charging, need help!!! long
I just replaced my alt about 2 weeks ago, had it tested after I took it off and was definately bad, got the new one on and ran around fine, only thing was it kept chewing on my belt, not enough to break it but there was super fine pieces of rubber sprayed all over the engine compartment.
Went to go to work one day and nothing, the car would attempt to crank then the starter clicked like a dead batt. 4 hours later I came to home and started the car without having to jump it, drove to my garage, shut it off and wouldnt start again.
Pulled starter and battery to get them tested, both test just fine, replaced the starter cable cause it had been toasted and taped up a few times, figured since I was there might as well.
Took the car back to the parts store and they tested the car and it showed the alt not putting out enough voltage, replaced the alt this morning with a new one and Im having the same probs.
If I put the multi meter anywhere and watch, the volts slowly drop off. Ive tested everything my GM book says, with the key on there is batt voltage at both the wires going into the plug, the ground is good, I did a ohm test from the casing, and going from the alt to the engine and the alt to the batt reads 0 ohms, the wire from the pos batt terminal to the alt also reads 0 ohms. I dont think I got a second alternator bad, although it is slightly possible, I want to make sure I have eliminated all possible problems before I take it and throw it throug Checkers window! I used to work there and have had hardly any problems with their life time stuff which is what I got.
Please someone tell me I overlooked something!
Other readings
From the Auto Xray it shows batt volts (most recently) at 11.5 and fuel pump volts at 11.0-10.8
All these readings are about .5-.7 less than what I get at the battery is this normal?
thanks
Jack

figured out the problem, dont trust checkers test equipment, had a bad battery that tested fine both on and off the car, put an old batt out of my S10 in the car and the alt automatically started working!
