Dash Light Fuse Blows

'89 IROC conv.
About 5 mo. ago, my dash light fuse would blow as soon as switch was pulled out. I tinkered with it, then gave up and took it to a garage. They put a new fuse in (like I hadn't put half-a-dozen in already),"banged on it, and it worked fine. No charge". Also no diagnosis. And it DID work fine. Well, now it's happening again. How can I troubleshoot this thing and fix it so it won't come back to haunt me again? Thanks.

Intermittent problems are the most fun to find......Look in any place that the wiring was modified, first - like the radio - it has a dash lights input (gray wire). Also, some switches, like the A/C control, have dash powered lights, too. The rear view mirror may have a dash powered light & the shifter indicator (auto only) has one, too. Check the wiring near all of these lights & then resort to following the gray wire from the 5 amp inst lps fuse to its various distribution points - a big one is the instrument cluster, itself - & remove one destination at a time, until the one with the short to ground in located.
