Help with rear deck lid

Hello fellow 3rd gen owners.i have a 88 I-ROC with a electronic rear deck lid.The motor will not come up.the button up front works to release it,but the motor stays down.SO i now have a decK lid that of course won't shut.Need a direction to go in diagnoseing this..I see a relay back there behind the panel, but I don't know what wires to probe,or what to look for.Motor??...relay??/..or is it that contact strip under the deck lid itself.
I thank you for your time, and hope to be back on the road this weekend :>)

my first guess would be either dead motor (do you hear any noise coming from it when activated?) or bad relay.
another obvious question, is do you have any loose wires in there?
the hatch releases you said, so the solenoid has power and means your motor should also have power.
when you have the hatch up, stand back there and put your finger into the slot as pictured here...the slot i'm referring to has a switch in it for telling the motor if the hatch is in or out of position...

now, when you put your finger in here does it make ANY noise whatsoever???
get back to me w/these answers and we'll work from there
