Tach Filter?????

Hello All!!! Man, It's good to be back here!!!!!! Anyways, I recently installed an MSD6AL on my 88GTA, 350TPI and under hard acceleration, the tach falls to zero. In their instructions, MSD says if this happens, to bypass the tach filter??. Anyone know where to locate this filter?

Thanks!

Ken

Ken;
My '91 Formula did the same thing. MSD sells a "tach adapter" which plugs into the MSD 6AL wiring to solve this problem. You can get it through Summit Racing for around $40 -$50. I called MSD to ask about the issue, told them I had the 6AL, MSD superconductor, MSD blaster coil and the salesman sent me one for free. The invoice stated, "Customer goodwill." It's a quick install, kinda ugly though. I remember Tom Keliher said he mounted his in a project box so it looked better.

Oh yeah. I forgot to answer your question. The futile search for a "tach filter" on F-body's used to be popular subject here. I don't think anyone ever found one.

The tach filter, if your car is equipped with one, is mounted to the fire wall with a screw, behind the distributor. It is cylindrical, about 1" long, 1/2" in diameter, has one wire on each end, and is gray. Both the '84 LC1 Berlinetta (and the '84 LG4 Berlinetta I used to own) had the tach filter. My '92 Z28 does not have one, and when I converted the '84 LC1 Berlinetta over to an LB9 with an MSD6AL, I removed the tach filter & the digital dash tach works fine now being driven from the tach output of the MSD6AL.

My car had a tach filter it is on the firewall just to the right of the distributor. I connected the tach output of my digital 6 to the wire that the filter was in line with and my tach works fine.

I removed my tach filter on my 88 TBI and this did not cure my 3000rpm shutoff so I bought the MSD tach filter which wasn't but $30 including shipping and handling and installed it with the stock tach filter still in place and it worked like a charm. The stoc ktach filter was a pain to get to because of it being located way down on my firewall and very cramped. I also made the dumbe mistake after playing with all the MSD wires, where they connect ot the factory wires, of leaving them sitting on top of my distributer! Two days later my distributer cap caught on fire and then was put out by a passing motorist with a cup of nice cold chocalate milkshake! I was in the store getting a fire extinguisher when he attempted to put it out. Needless to say it worked but one wire was still flaming! Luckily all it did was mess up the cap and rotor and my sparkplug wires. It did blacken my paint on the firewall a little.

Try removing the tach filter if you want or go ahead and buy the MSD filter. Every car is different from all the post I have seen.

Here is a pic of where I mounted my filter. It took longer to mount it than to connect it. All I did was unplugg the MSD wires where I used nice wire connectors at and plug the MSD inline with them. hard to see in this picture but you get the idea.

I wanna see a pic of the tach filter in place on a 3rd gen! This is the first time I have ever heard of anyone actually locating this mysterious filter!
