I want to switch my 89 Trans Am dash cluster out, for a GTA digital dash. I was hoping to get some input on how hard it is going to be? Do I need any special wiring or tools?? Do I need to mess around with the computer in anyway?? I have taken my dash apart before, to replace some burnt bulbs, and it was pretty easy taking it apart and putting it back.

You will need to get an electronic vehicle speed sensor (VSS) to replace the cable drive unit on the transmission & wire it to a speed buffer, and then wire the speed buffer to the cluster & ECM, since your present cluster has a speedo cable drive. There were some posts relating to this topic a few weeks back.

If you have an 89 you should already have the electronic vss. mine is an 88 and I have it. I think 86 and up got it in the 'birds. Along with that you will need a complete donor car. You will need about %65 (estimate) of the wiring. The harness is completely different. It involves taking not only the dash cluster but the entire dashdoard completely. Basically you will have to remove the entire thing up to the firewall. Then for the digital one you will have to get the entire harness. It has wires running to all of the lights on the car, well except the inside ones. It really isnt worth the trouble unfortunately. I was going to do it but I decided it was too much work. If you do decide to do it get a Helms service manual for the year of the digital car. It will be worth its weight in gold for you then.
