Fog Light Relay

What exactly is the fog light relay used for. It appears to me it is only used to shut of the fog lights when the brights are on. Is this true? Can I just connect the two brown wires from the relay connector together? The fog lights stay on when the brights are on. Does anyone know of any problems with this?

Yes, you are correct. The purpose of the fog light relay is to turn off the fog lights when the high beams are turned on. Since the relay coil is off when the high beams are turned on [there is 12 volts at both the high beam (green) wire & the running lights (pin 5 brown) wire], either the relay contacts are stuck in the closed position, or the high beams are not being energized. Here's where the wires go:

Pin 5 brown: From running light circuit. Connects to relay coil.

Pin 2 green: From high beam circuit. Connects to relay coil.

Pin 4 rust fusible link: From red wire battery power. Connects to relay pole contact.

Pin 1 brown: To fog light switch. Connects to relay N.O. contact.

Thanks Tim. I just connected the two brown wires together, the relay seemes to be bad and heavily corroded.

to answer your last question if anyone knows of a problem with this...
you should check w/local authorities about the legality of having fog lights on at SAME time as your high beams.
an initial guess here is that you might be a 'bad boy' if you do this.

Why would anyone want fog lights on concurrently with high beams? They're self-defeating.

Re: Fog Light Relay

holy hell, this is exactly what I was looking for. So the plug that comes from the relay with the green wire and the brown wire goes to the running light/brown (parking light) and to the high beam/green?

This is the thread I created. I even posted a pic.
