Problem with relay

The car being discussed is a carbureted 86' Z28. When I'm driving my car I can hear an "electrical" thunking sound coming from either under the hood or the dash, it sounds like a relay switching on and off. As this is happening the voltage gauge is fluctuating from high to low. It seems like the altinator is overcharging (it is a farely new altinator, the one I replaced had a problem with the voltage regulator). The funny part is when I turn the lights on, or something that takes away power, like the AC, it stops. Do any of you guys have an idea what it could be? The funny part is I have an amp and pulleys but it still seems to be over charging.

If you disconnect the plug in connector at the alternator, does the problem go away? (The voltage should be on the low side with only the battery running the car, but constant - not varying.) If this does cure the problem, it is probably another bad voltage regulator in your alternator, or an open or high resistance path somewhere. Do you have the 2 wire plug in connector (red & brown) alternator? If so, check the red wire connection between the plug in connector & the output lug, the connection between the output lug & the battery, the ground connection between the pass side cylinder head & the frame (woven copper strap), the short ground connection between the battery & the frame, and the ground connection between the battery & the block.
