Installing a car alarm..............
Installing a car alarm..............
I was going to install an alarm myself and I was wondering if something has to be done with that security chip in your key in order for the alarm to work? Just wondering because I heard that something does......Thanks

The security chip (VATS) is a good thing...you should leave it the way it is. It won't interfere with your alarm at all. You only need to bypass VATS if you're hooking up a remote start, and even then, you should use a relay so that the VATS will still be able to prevent theft.

The VATS will not interfere with your alarm system at all. The VATS will keep anyone from hot-wiring the car but will NOT stop anybody from breaking in or vandalizing it.
I highly recommend you get an alarm especially if you have anything valuable (stereo, etc)inside. Besides, insurance companies do offer discounts if you have an alarm installed.

So what if I was going to install a remote start? What would I have to do? I need to warm up the car here with this blistering cold we've had lately.

You'll need a cheap resistor from Radio Shack. Use a multimeter to have someone measure the resistance in the chip in your key...then go buy a resistor just like it. Should be like fifty cents.
It's extremely easy to splice in the resistor, but it would leave your car more vulnerable to theft. You could add a $10 relay and it would "hook up" the resistor only while the remote starter is turned on.
Either way, the place where you hook up the resistor is you take off the underdash panel, and there's a piece of orange tubing. Slice the tubing open and there are two thin white wires in there. You just cut them and wire the resistor in....how you hook it up depends on if you're using the relay or not, but it's very simple either way.
