Air Bag

Guy,s I have a 1992 rs with the 3.1 in it. My air bag light came on and I was wondering what causes this. It stays on and doesn't go off till the car is shut off.

Let me guess the infl rest light sits there and flashes at you like you should know what to do. i have this same problem and unfortuanately noone knows what to do. this means that your airbag system is disarmed either due to low voltage (could be cause by a bad alternator) or your air bag is no good. there could be a short in the system somewhere or possibly one of the sensors could have gone bad. there is only one way to find out. take it to the dealer. (not your drug dealer) although he might make you feel better bout this but it will only make you forget until the little red light comes on again. damn i hate that thing. if i was you i would rip out that bulb, take your air bag and all the sensors and have a bon fire!!!!! ahhahahhaha

airbag diagnostics

Check the SIR fuse first.
If okay, check the DERM module connector is still connected. This is under the passenger side of the dash. Silver box, yellow connector.
If these are okay, let me know and we will try to check further in.

By the way, when ignition is first turned on, does the lamp blink 7 to 9 times, or does it come on and stay on?

Andy.

The light does flash when the ignition is turned on. I checked the silver box and found nothing to be wrong. The light fist blinks then it stays on.

Hi 92 3.1 Rs
Did you check the SIR fuse in the fuse box?

Right, this is important! We have to follow a procedure through.
Answer me these as well as you can.

1) Switch ignition on and count the number of flashes. Let me know.

2) As the engine is cranking, does it stay on or go off?

3) When engine is idling, does the light stay on or does it flash?

After the answers to these I will be able to take you through a routine specific to your fault.

Speak to you soon.
Andy.

The fuse is good and the light flashes seven times. When the car is cranking the light still flashes. At an idle the light stays on.

I took my car to a friend that works on cars. I just had an alarm installed and they tapped into the wire for the air bag sensor.
My friend was checking the continuity betweem the sensors and found there to be none in the front sensor.I am going to put a new front sensor in to see if that helps out.I will let you know if it works out.

Okay.
Back home again!
Right.
1) check the CRANK fuse (3A).
2) Pull DERM module out of dash, (but leaving it connected to harness)-from the top, dashpad removed. Using a digital voltmeter (a modern one, otherwise the airbag can deploy) and sitting in the passenger seat (i.e away from the airbag, in case of deployment), back probe the pin marked B10 in yellow connector to DERM while engine is cranking. If this is less than cranking voltage, go to 3, if it is cranking voltage, go to 4.

3) Switch ignition off, disconnect DERM and measure the resistance of terminal B10 on the DERM connector compared to ground. If it is 10 ohms or less, replace DERM. If it is over 10 ohms, repair break or bad connection in purple/white wire that goes from the CRANK fuse to terminal B10.

4) Check for good terminal contact at pin B10 at DERM. If pin contact is good, replace DERM.

Hope this helps.

Andy.
